This can be cause by a fauty sensor, but it is more likely that there is some small piece of paper somewhere in the printer. Here's a link to the troubleshooting document, it has some fairly decent images of where to look:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docnam e=c01312792&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=3795406
If you feel that you've already looked everywhere, turn it off and flip it upside down, give it a light shake and see if anything falls out of it. If nothing falls out and all the steps listed in the document are completed, then it a blown sensor in which case HP will replace under warranty.
If you're out of warranty call HP tech support at 800-474-6836 and ask to do a trade in, you'll most likely be offered a 6500A or an 8500A, you will want to go with the 6500A if it's offered, takes the same ink cartridges and is the least problimatic officejet in the lineup.
Hope that helps!
