i have had my HP photosmart 5512 for about 6 months and i have gone through two different sets of ink cartridges (the original one that came with the printer, and a new one) the new one that i purchased (for about $70) has only given me about 9 8x10 photos and is now low on ink. is this common for the ink to only last that long? the last picture i printed out was a black and white photo and it came out red and pink for the last half of it. not too impressed with the cost of the ink cartridge VS. the amount of use. if that's the case, then i am going to have to go to another brand printer. huge fan of the HP products but as an up and coming photographer, I'm going to need a little more out of the ink, especially when it costs as much as it does. I'm not doing a whole lot of prints from home as far as pictures go, but in this case, i was printing out a simple 15 page sample portfolio of 8x10s and couldnt print them all. please help

I would not worry too much about the original set of cartridges running out quickely for this printer. The ones supplied with the machine are a low capacity starter cartridge and a large amount of this ink is used during setup. When buying replacement cartridges I would recommend always going for the 564XL capacity for this machine as they offer a lower cost per page.
You could of course make further savings by purchasing remanufactured or compatible cartridges, but as a photographer I would imagine the fade, water and smear resistance of Vivera ink is potentially more valuable to you.
I hope this helps in some small way.
