Envy 7640
Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan

Printer sees the router (returns its name), Mac sees the router, printer prints from USB port on Mac, but Printer is not connected according to Mac's print utility and HP Utility says "Unable to communicate with the selected device.  It may have been turned off, or otherwise disconnected."  It's on.  Printer copies and scans to computer over USB.

Suggestions please!

Hi Stephenzee,

What i've understand from your setup that your printer and Mac is connected via wireless on same router. You also connected using USB both Mac and printer. You can print using USB but having troubles on the HP Utility.

You may want to try disconnecting your wireless connection from yojur printer. Then try again.

If still not working, you may run HP Easy Start which can bre downloaded here http://support.hp.com/sg-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-envy-7640-e-all-in-one-printer-series/6617267/mod...

Please update me if problem still exists.

Hi Steppenzee,

I suggest you check the printer firmware version, and compare to HP web site current recommended firmware version.  If too old, do firmware upgarde now.  Alternatively, you can use the following link if you still encountered any connection issue, what I understand so far, HP printer can connected with USB and setup WIFI connectivity together, no issue.
