Why do all the 4 ink cartridges run down at the same rate even though I'm mainly using B&W printing.
I thought the whole marketing ploy was that one could replace each individual cartridge if and when it ran low on ink. However, as mentioned, they all run down at the same rate regardless!
Sounds like a money making racket to me.

What are you printing? Have you selected "Print in Grayscale" and "Black Ink Only" in the driver? Graphics (even grayscale graphics) will generally be printed with the color inks unless you specify only black ink be used. When printing on Photo paper the color ink will always be used, the black ink is not compatible with photo paper.
For normal printing it is not unusual for the colors to be depleted at almost identical rates. Unless you are printing logos with a particular color is is common that the colors will be used about the same.
