HP #nvy 5530
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

I have an HP Envy 5530 and am having a problem initiating it. When I turn it on, it tells me to load plain paper, which is already loaded. When I touch OK on the printer screen, it then says that it is printing alignment page and continues to spin in 'thinking' mode indefinitely. If I choose the cancel button on the printer, then it says that it is cancelling, and will spin there indefinitely.

I have tried uninstalling and re-installing the software but that doesn't help.

If I try to control it from my computer interface, it suggests that I print an alignment page. When I select yes, it continues to spin indefinitely and the alignment page doesn't print.

I have run the print and scan doctor but that doesn't seem to solve the problem either.

Is my printer broken?

Hi @eperry,

Welcome to the HP Support Forums!

I see that you're unable to resolve the issue with the alignment problem on your HP Envy 5530 Printer. I would be happy to help you and please remember to return to this thread and mark 'Accept as Solution' if I have successfully helped you resolve the issue. If you wish to say 'thanks' for my effort to help, click the 'thumbs up' to give me a Kudos.

I understand the frustration that you're experiencing. If the alignment doesn't finish, it will continue to try to calibrate the printer. It sounds like the printer is stuck in an error state.

I would do a hard reset to see if that will resolve the issue.

  1. Leave the printer on and unplug the power cable from the printer and wall outlet for 60 seconds.
  2. Then reconnect the power cable to the printer and wall outlet rather than a surge protector. This ensures the printer is receiving full power and may help this situation.
  3. Make sure the printer is connected directly to a wall outlet (don't use a power bar or a surge protector). This ensures the printer is receiving full power and may help this situation.

What are the ink levels?

If you have a defective ink cartridge, it might be under warranty. To check the warranty on your ink supplies, go to hp.com/go/learnaboutsupplies, select your country/region, and then review the limited warranty information for your supplies.

Allow the printer to complete the alignment process. The alignment requires unused, plain white letter or A4-sized paper with a brightness level of at least 85 into the tray.

In addition, I would use this post as a guide to resolving alignment failures by my colleague @DexterM.

If you have access to a computer running Windows 8.1 or earlier, update the printer's firmware. Click here to download and install the update.

If you completed all the preceding steps and your product still has an issue, service the product.

Contacting HP for service in all countries/regions except Asia Pacific.
First, go to Check your product warranty to check your printer warranty status, and then go to Contact HP Support to find an authorized service dealer or to schedule a repair.

Repair fees might apply for out-of-warranty printers.
What you can do, is use the following link to create yourself a case number, then call and it may help speed up the call process:
Step 1. Open link: www.hp.com/contacthp/
Step 2. Enter Product number or select to auto detect
Step 3. Scroll down to "Still need help? Complete the form to select your contact options"
Step 4. Scroll down and click on HP contact options - click on Get phone number
Case number and phone number appear.

Please respond to this post with the result of your troubleshooting. I look forward to hearing from you. Good Luck! 🙂

No your printer is NOT broken had the same problem as mine I tried all that was suggested on different support forums. I have solved the problem by following this: First do a reset you can find how to do a reset on your hp envy 5530 in you tube. Once you have done this you go to the reset option which basically gives you 2 choices a partial reset or a semi full reset. I choose the semi-full reset. Once you have done this your wireless connection will be lost. I uninstalled my hp envy printer program in the computer and then went to hp website to re-install the complete software and drivers for hp envy 5530. I then reconnect the printer with the computer using usb or a wired connection. Once I have done my computer then asked if I want to make a wireless connection with the printer as well. So I just follow the instructions on the screen to make a wireleess connection. Once this wireless connection was re-established I pulled the wire that is the power cord from the back of the printer to do a hard reset I left it for a while may be 15 minutes. then when I reconnect the power cord at the back of the printer my hp envy 5530 printer initialize and started fine.

My printer has done that several time.  The latest just a few minutes ago.  Absolutely makes me crazy!   Couldn't remember what I did last time to get it to work but unplugging and replugging the printer didn't work.  I rebooted my computer and printer several times and still didn't work.  In frustration, I opened the top and pulled out one of the ink cartridges.  Put it back in and closed the lid.  Opened the lid another two or three times then noticed my menu was up.  Was able to go in and clean my printer head (which didn't help my original problem of partial printing).  BUT did get it out of the page alignment loop.    Hope this helps 🙂
