After installing new black ink cartridge, error message came up: "Print cartridge problem [black]. Refer to device documentation to trouble shoot."

I removed cartridge and reinserted. Same message. then unplugged printer, and turned it off. when turned on again, the same message.

Thanks, Jason, for your support.  Lesson learned: stick with what worked before, e.g., 901 XL print cartridge, as opposed to 901.

Hey sandsid,

I see you are having an issue with your Officejet 4500 not recognizing the black cartridge.  The issue may be that the contacts in the printer are dirty and need to be cleaned.

Have you tried cleaning the contacts of the printer cartridge and the matching contacts inside the printer?

Figure 9: Clean the contacts

1 - Copper-colored contacts
2 - Ink nozzles (do not clean)

Also clean the matching contacts inside the printer as this is most likely where the problem lies if the issue is of dirty contacts.

As well, take a look at the steps in the document linked below for the Officejet 4500.

Let me know how it goes,
Jason

Thanks!  I'll try that tomorrow.

I had planned to return the cartridge, but hadn't had a chance. My friend & I had determined from the process we went through that it was defective. I bought another cartridge at Office Depot, same exact one, model 901. When I installed that, it came up with a message that "black ink cartridge is missing."

Today I received in the mail my order from HP for a 901XL (has more ink).  That was what the former owner used on this printer. It seemed to work well, able to copy a paper. However, I got a notice on my computer that I needed to install a program, one that costs money. My former computer adviser told me not to do that. I haven't tried to print anything from the computer yet. Again, tomorrow I might be willing to try that. This Windows 8 and the tempermental printer have taken up way too much of my valuable time.

Thank you for taking the time to respond, Jason.

Hey Sidney,

Thanks for the update and continued information.  It sounds like either the cartridges themselves were defective or could not make electrical contact with the printer.  If you have a 901XL that is functioning at this time, which is what sounds to be the case from your post, then it is more likely that the cartridges themselves were at fault.  I am glad to hear that the unit is functioning with the 901XL if this is the case as the printer should resume normal functionality for you.

Best of luck,

Jason

Bull. It ought not to balk in the first place. The contacts are I think clean, the refilled HP cartridge from Amazon is new...given a comparison of Amazon service and reliability, and HP as to low cost printers, no way would I believe HP. The printer firmware or software seems to be the issue. As suggeted...and why do we have to do such things...a full system restart DOES in my experience work. Sometimes. On a random basis. Not acceptable.
