I have just downloaded the most recent software for my HP Officejet 6500 E709a to my Mac laptop (running OS X Lion 10.7.4) and am able to do everything with the printer except scan (printing and querying supply status, etc. works just fine).
The error I get when scanning from the HP Scan 3 application is "Scanner communication cannot be established."
I have seen other similar posts on this forum where they ask you to first verify you have the most recent software. Since I just downloaded it, it is safe to assume that I do. There was also a suggestion to use the "Image Capture" application to attempt a scan. When I looked in this application, the scanner is not listed.
Many thanks in advance for any assistance that can be offered.

Download and install this: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL907
Reset the printing system:
- Go to System Preferences > Print & Scan
- Right (or control) click in the rectangle listing your printers and select Reset Printing System.
WARNING - this will delete ALL of your printers!
- Select the plus sign to re-add a printer. Select the Defualt tab on the top of the window. Look for the printer, select it and wait until the "Add" button becomes available. Click it.

I wanted to scan a document from an HP Officejet 6500 to my mac os x v 10.8. Found partial solution in system preferences in hardware and print and scan.
Much more awkward than my old PC connections to same printer.
Got the scan done but found more problems. Most of issues are wityh my unfamiliarity with Apple Mac.
But, your help link got me started - thanks.

Try scanning from your Mac. Use Image Capture app in your Applications folder.
Click once on the scanner on the left side, then click on Show Details along the bottom. Along the right side you will see LOTS of options for scanning and saving.
