The only problem with this method is that if you are using DHCP to issue IP addresses on your network, then your printer may pick up a new IP address anytime the router is restarted, and then you'll have to go through these steps all over again.

That is why it is a good idea to set a static IP outside the DHCP pool.  Use this method to set a static IP address for the printer:

- Print a Network Config Page from the front of the printer. Note the printer's IP address.
- Type that IP address into a browser to reveal the printer's internal settings.
- Choose the Networking tab, then Wireless along the left side, then the IPv4 tab.
- On this screen you want to set a Manual IP. You need to set an IP address outside the range that the router automatically sets (called the DHCP range). If you do not know the range, change the last set of numbers (those after the last '.') to 250
- Use 255.255.255.0 for the subnet (unless you know it is different, if so, use that)
- Enter your router's IP (on the Network Config Page) for the gateway.
- Enter 8.8.8.8 for the first DNS and 8.8.4.4 for the second DNS.
- Click 'Apply'.

Now, shut down the router and printer, start the router, wait, then start the printer.

After this you may need to redo 'Add a Printer' using the new IP address.

Same problem on a Photosmart C7200. I checked the DHCP client table on my Cisco router firmware and the printer registers itself just fine. Seems that turning everything off and then turning on router first, printer second, and computers third helps reset everything. I can imagine that since this is so delicate, there are probably other potential sources of issues (like sharing, as someone else mentioned). But then again, when i was using all Windows computers on my network, i still had trouble with the HP printer network settings, whether wired or wireless. It's been a good printer for the past four years, but the software/driver that come with it have never been that great.

I've got this problem even though my printer always has the same IP address (192.168.1.6). Funny thing, though, is that typing this address in the browser turns up just an Apache test page (It works!) instead of the useful information hinted at in some posts and support articles.

HP Recommended

Type the IP address into the address bar, not a Google or Bing search bar.

Yes, thank you.

Even if I would have made that mistake, don't you think the output would've been different?

Not sure, I would guess so, but I have seen some strange stuff here.

Download and run this utility: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=mp-104282-2&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en...

What does it say?

It says everything's fine and asks to print a test page. When printing this page, the same problem occurs: printer seems to go temporarily offline (to Windows, not to the printer) and the print fails. The software application does not detect this.

When using the HP configuration manager, it cannot find the printer in the network somehow. I don't know whether this is related.

What router are you using?
