have sorted this! hope works for others!
My black print on 5510 stopped suddenly so tried this and it worked
Make a fair sized square
autofill with black
if nothing or pale repeat and repeat etc.
tried about 10 times it got darker
then cleaned print heads again...

I seem to have the same problem. Replaced a depleted black cartridge in 5510 and found that the printer wouldnt print any black on the Align Printer page. Figured it was a faulty cartridge so tried another - same thing. Tried the hard reset, the half reset, removing the cartridge and cleaning out any dried ink blockage - same result.
the odd thing is that i tried a Printer Status report a few times too - i get a print out with four black square brackets, three of them have a block of pink, blue and yellow within the black brackets but the fourth bracket is empty. the brackets are definitely a solid black colour som im wondering whether its a software or firmware issue.
is that a possiblity, and if so is there a way to reset the software or update the firmware?
if thats not possible or likely to be the issue, please send a private message with the other solution that has not been publicly available!

The test page uses color inks to mix and make the black ink in the brackets for ink levels in the test page. (This is so that the limits would be visible even if black or another color were not working.)
When did you purchase the printer?

funnily enough, and thankfully like a few others on hte forum, a couple of days after installing the new catridge, it seems to be working perfectly well again. any ideas as to why this happens??

Glad to hear it's back working. Can I ask do you print infrequently? (once every week or two?)

I'd recommend running a printhead clean maybe once a week or every 10 days
