Just spoke with a very courteous and knowledgable HP Support tech in Canada…
(Before I proceed, you should know that I did ask him if I could share what follows, and he said "Yes.")
I sent him the URL to this thread (like you did to your guy) and he read it. We discussed the Direct Wireless test.
As he requested, we connected to Web Services and there was an update to download. No change in the firmware ID code, though.
We wanted to see if the update download fixed the problem, so (again as he requested) I turned on Direct Wireless (with No Security). I printed a Network report so that I could get the Direct Wireless host IP address (192.168.223.1). I connected to Direct Wireless with my iPhone 4 (and later with my MacBook Pro — just to confirm) and tried the IP address. No response from the EWS, as before. Using the https protocol once again raised the certificate alert.
I understand from him that there has been a firmware update in the past few weeks, but that it addressed an issue with apps, not EWS.
He offered another replacement printer--a different model this time. After discussing a few more details about 7520 testing and replacement device features, I finally accepted his kind offer.
I've had several HP printers over the years (most recently the Photosmart 3210, C6100, and 5510) and been happy with them all. Everything about the 7520 has been great except this EWS issue. So, with that in mind, I want to see this through, both as an engineer and as a long-time• HP fan.
We'll just see where this leads, I guess. Thanks again for your input! I'll post my own updates as news develops, but it might be a few days now...
• though they're a different company today than they were then, I've been buying the HP label since the '70s.

Hello, if you could please respond with how this ends up that would be great. I am experiencing the same issue. All PC's on Windows 7 pro. Some hard wired and some wireless. The printer is on a wireless connection, but I plan to switch it to a wired connection to see if that makes any difference. I will let you know my findings.

I suggest you also try the Direct Wireless connection method, if you can. Be sure to get a printout of your complete wireless settings (available from the 7520 control panel) so that you have the correct IP address for the EWS (it's a different address from the one used for a regular wireless connection).
Otherwise, I plan to post an update when this gets resolved, as you ask, but it could be several days.

Received replacement printer (different model from 7520) today. Installed same.
Embedded Web Server works (straight out of the box) on both regular wireless network (without any special local wireless network configurations) and Direct Wireless.
Checking other services now to make sure there's nothing lost for that which has been gained.
Reporting results to HP Support Specialist this evening. Will be back with you tomorrow with a more comprehensive update.

Please allow me to politely decline answering your request. Here's why...
The Support Technician with whom I have been working told me that HP puts no constraint on my sharing with others the model number of the AiO printer they sent to me. Even so, he and I both independently understand that someone else's feature requirements might not be the same as mine; therefore, we also both believe that defining a specific replacement might actually misdirect one's expectations and thus limit their options for the most satisfactory solution.
To be a bit more specific, the printer they sent me lists for a price that's the same as that of the 7520, but it is not a Photosmart series printer. It therefore does not have a separate photo paper tray. Though that tray is a nice convenience*, I was willing to accept the different printer for its strength in other features that are especially useful to me. Your priorities are likely different than mine; therefore you should work out with them (since they appear to be most willing to do so) what solution best suits your needs.
Sorry this explanation is so lengthy, but your recent assistance merits the best reply I can muster.
* and even though the photo quality from the 7520 is the best I've ever seen on any printer I've owned

I agree with your suspicion, and recently wrote to the Support Technician with whom I've been working to say (a bit more specifically) where I think the problems lie. He kindly relayed my thoughts to their design/engineering team (perhaps because I'm an EE?). I also gather that they're working on it.
Allow me to humbly suggest that you…
• Make sure you've downloaded and installed the latest software drivers and utilities (after first uninstalling the old software).
• Try connecting with your printer using its Direct Wireless feature (if you haven't already).
• If that fails, call HP Support on the phone, and describe that specific result (along with your other tests) to them. (They, IMO, are very courteous and helpful.)
You might also consider mentioning to them that you have read this thread, and give them a link to it.
Also, if you get the chance, please let us know the results of your Direct Wireless test.

Has it worked over "Direct Wireless" for anyone? If not, I'm not real interested in messing with the settings to test it myself, especially since I won't be using the printer that way.

Thanks for the direction, but I was unsuccesful connecting to the EWS by connecting to direct connection. I've tried restoring the printer to factory defaults even though the only thing to change was it's IP address. I did reinstall the lastest drivers from HP's site, dropped all firewalls, and tried accessing with multiple browsers. For the heck of it I added on the port number to the end of the address, but still turned up empty handed.
As of now everything else seems to function properly I just cannot access EWS. I'll need to contact HP at this point, I just hope I don't receive a tech with a list of automated responses asking me to go through everything I just did. If I find any resolution I will post later.
