I tried that. Only problem is that when you remove one cartridge, the printer flashes an error (on the pc), becomes non-operational and doesn't allow me to print until I replace the cartridge.  Only solution I see, is replacing the black cartridge with an empty one and see what happens. I don't have one at hand though. Apart from me now printing solid black pages until my cartridge is empty, is theres a hard- or software override for the printer to work with only one cartridge inserted? Anyhow, my guess is that your right, and that indeed PDF's are printed without the usage of black ink. Next to the blurry problem, this would mean a major waste of ink..

Just remembered that some time ago (back when PDF's printed normally, Ye Olde Bookshoppe, Back when ComicSans was at the apex of swag), I noticed that if my black ink cartridge was empty, Acrobat automaticly started using colours to simulate black and keep on printing. I was glad of it at the time since I desperatly needed to hand in a paper, but this problem could very well have something to do with that function..

What is the cartridge number for your black cartridge?

You should be able to print with only one cartridge installed.  The printer can operate in Ink Backup Mode.  Or, at least, it should work.  See the User's Guide.  See Page 77 for details.  It will not make a photocopy with only one installed cartridge, but it should print.  Here is what is supposed to happen.

Installed print cartridge      Result
Black print cartridge           Colors print as grayscale.

Tri-color print cartridge      Colors print but black is grayed and is not a true black.
Photo print cartridge           Colors print as grayscale.

If you try to print a document from the computer, can you click "OK" through the error messages that pop up?

For black printing, the printer should use the black ink.  From your description, it does sound like the black cartridge is having a problem.  You might try cleaning the cartridge contacts if you haven't already.  See Page 80 of the above link.  After that you might try running the Clean Print Cartridge utility up to 3 times.  See Page 79 of the same link.

Also, remember a click on the Kudos star to the left is a quick "Thanks" for a helpful post.
