My older HP 2610  I could just goto start / all programs / HP / then click on 2610 and find it in there .. the 2640  doesn't go that far..

Hi chauncey2,

Welcome to the HP Support Forums! Smiley Happy I see you are interested in monitoring your ink levels on your HP Deskjet 2540. Please take a look here at Checking Ink Levels. Follow these steps to check the ink levels for your printer. Check the ink levels to determine how soon you might need to replace a cartridge. The ink level shows an estimate of the amount of ink remaining in the cartridges.

Please remember you must have the Full feature software and drivers installed to access this information.

I hope this was helpful.

Thank you,

HP 2540 printer - Windows 8.1.

I don't seem to be able to upgrade the drivers from Basic to Full Featured so that I can check ink levels. I always end up in a window where the only selection is "install new printer" Do I need to uninstall the basic drivers and install the Full Featured ones?

Thanks,

Rick Nelson

Hello @Rick1946,

Yes, I suggest installing the full feature software and drivers for your HP Deskjet 2540, this will give you all available features and options for your computer running the Windows 8.1 Operating system.

@Rick1946,

Yes you will need to uninstall the basic software, please follow the steps below:

1. Unplug the USB if using a direct connection.

2. Remove the HP DJ 2540 software from your computers Control Panel's Uninstall a program option.

3. Restart the computer.

4. Make sure all the DJ 2540 software is gone from the programs list as well as your HP folder listed under the All programs in your Start Menu.

5. Now go ahead and download the software and drivers for your 6310 (DO NOT plug in USB until the software prompts you to):

6. Go ahead and print a test page.

7. If you are unable to print a test page, please run the HP Print and Scan Doctor- It was designed by HP to provide users with the troubleshooting and problem solving features needed to resolve many common problems experienced with HP print and scan products connected to Windows-based computers.

Please let me know if this was successful! I will watch for your reply.

Thank you,

This doesn't work for me. All I get is the customer support home page.

Is it because I've got a Chromebook?
