It seems lots of people are complaining that their devices print grayscale from mixed colors, but I'm on the other side of the fence.  I would PREFER this option in order to conserve black ink, which runs out frequently while color stays full, and I cannot print if one cartridge is empty.  I've used many printers in the past which allow you to mix colors into black, but that option isn't easy to find until black ink is empty and an alert prompts me to mix, and this HP printer doesn't seem to have the option anywhere (I feel I've searched thoroughly and found nothing even close).

Is it even possible to do this?  I'm in an office here, we print lots of text and no images, so quality isn't very important but saving money totally is.

You could select Photo media in the driver to force the use of color to print the black areas, but it is not likely to be more economical.  A better solution may be to use the XL version of the black cartridge.
