"However, it can take up to thirty days (depending on your bank) for your bank to release the funds back to you.  On top of this, he did not tell me that there would also be a $1 authorization hold."

Anyone reading this should know, Its not HP holding the $1 Pending fee. Its the banking/CC firm handling the transaction. Employees half the time don't know about this unless they are told.

This just happend to me recently at a gas station. The attendent gave me a refund for a faulty transaction at a pump kiosk.

When I looked up my account info the next day, there was the $1 fee pending. I called my bank and they said it would be removed when the transaction completed (up to 30 days) depending on the CC companies involved. "Usually" it only take about 4-5 business days though.

Ah well. If the noise is in the scanner part, that's a different kettle of fish.

The scanner part can be opened quite easily.

  • Remove the six top screws.
  • Remove a screw which is hidden behind the front flap.
  • Very slowly lift the scanner assembly out. Watch it, there are three ribbon cables! Carefully observe their paths, so you know how to put them back again afterwards. The trickiest is the ribbon cable leading to the keyboard/display unit.
  • Unplug the three ribbon cables, and the scanner part is now freed from the main unit.
  • To open the scanner part, with the scanner part resting on its bottom, unclip the three plastic clips on the front, near the bottom. Then carefully pry the assembly appart.

You will then have access to the actual scanner shuttle assembly, and you can see what's wrong with that. It might well not be repairable - so the whole endeavour might have been in vain. But then, you never know.

Good luck!
