HP Officejet 6500A plus
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

My HP Officejet 6500A plus only prints in color. Internet connection is wireless.  I used HP print/scan doctor to no avail.  I reinstalled drivers. I changed all cartridges.  I reinstalled software. I get messages that the printer lost the connect, yet the printer internet icon is still blue.  Any suggestions?

Hi @Cindy19,

Thanks for taking an interest in the HP support forums. A very good day to you. 🙂 I understand that you require assistance regarding issues with the printer not working. It will be a delight to help you. 🙂

Splendid troubleshooting. Superb effort and commendable description of the issue. Kudos to you for that. 🙂 You are an important HP customer and it is an absolute privilege to share this platform with you. 🙂

For better clarity and to assist you better I would require more information regarding this.

  • Have you tried making a few copies directly in black from the printer to isolate the issue?
  • Did you bypass power strips and perform a hard reset on the printer?

For a start, please try to make a few copies in black directly from the printer.

  • Please try to make a few copies directly from the printer without any intervention from the computer. Please place the required document face down on the flatbed scanner and touch the copy button. If it copies fine, then the issue could be software related.

If it copies correctly in black, please uninstall the printer software completely by following these steps:

  • In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.
  • Select your HP printer.
  • Select Uninstall.
  • In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.
  • In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”
  • Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.
  • Type printui.exe /s and click OK.
  • Click on Drivers tab.
  • Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click Remove at the bottom.
  • Select OK.
  • Remove all instances of the same.
  •   Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties windows.
  • Close Devices and Printers. This should o the trick for you asl long the printer does not have a hardware issue.
  • If it does not copy, then the printer has a hardware issue.

Then please reinstall the full feature software from this link: http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/HP-Officejet-6500A-e-All-in-One-Printer-series---E7/... please select the correct operating system and reinstall it. Please update the printer firmware also from the same link.

Hope this helps.  Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great. 🙂  Please reach out for any issues and I'll be there to assist you. 🙂

To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help.

If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles. 🙂

Take care now and have a splendid week ahead. 🙂

David Thank you for your suggestions. I was not able to make copies in black, so I reinstalled Op.Sys. and printer firmware. However when the popup stating "Welcome to HP PRinter Update" opened, I was unable to select the "update" button after I highlighted the printer that I was updaing (also the only printer). I was also unable to check the box to select the printer. So I am not confident that the system did update. I also refreshed, and tried again, but to no avail.  While snooping around the Advance Print options, I noticed that the "Print in Grayscale" option was "off" and the Print all text in black was disabled. Are these the correct settings?

Thanks again for any assistance.  Cindy

Hi @Cindy19,

I thank you for your super quick response. Thanks for trying these steps. You've done a commendable job of troubleshooting. Kudos to you for a job well done. 🙂  No those are not correct settings and "black" should not be disabled. Try to enable it if possible, or try to turn on "print in Gay scale" option if possible.

As the copy has failed it is definitely a hardware issue with the printer. Please contact Hp phone support to get it replaced or upgraded.

You've been simply fabulous to work with, considering your technical expertise and exhaustive technical skills. 🙂  It has been an absolute privilege to share this platform with you. 🙂 Trust me, I've done all I can to assist you, by keeping your best interest in mind. 🙂

I hope things pan out well and everything works great for you. 🙂 We have at least worked as a team to figure out that the copy option does not work, which points to a hardware issue. Great job on doing that and Thank you very much for your time. 🙂
