Have had this printer for about 10 months now (purchased at Walmart). Never had any issues...until today.
Noticed that black ink was starting to streak with white lines (sign of getting low), and ran clean head utility. Did not resolve, so went to WalMart and got a box of new black ink.
Installed (as per directions), but this time...the printer would not recognize the ink. Pulled it out and re-installed again. Still, the same. Unplugged the printer (with cartridge out), waited about 10 minutes, and plugged back in. Opened unit, and installed black ink cartridge again. Still..."Cartridge Problem" on screen, and did not go any further. Will not run any utilities, and all attempts to print give a screen (on Windows 7) that reads "Ink Cartridge Problem -- -- Black."
I've read through dozens of forums, but to no avail. I simply can't believe that this unit would just die from putting in an ink cartridge.

What is the warranty ends date on the cartridge? (YYYY/MM/DD) If it's in warranty you can always call HP Phone Support
Also, as this is a 4622 it's worth checking you have the latest firmware

Brand new cartridge - in date.
Firmware will not update.
Already talked with tech support -- dead printer. Will not work.
Purchased new one online and will pickup today.

Hi Sean, so if the printer is only 10mths it should still be in warranty (usually 1yr from purchase date). Did Support not offer to replace the whole printer?

Hi Sean, I take it you already cleaned the cartridge contacts in the printer?
Do any of the pins there look slightly out of place? Could you maybe take a photo and post it here?

Ok, sorry to hear the old won't work. Out of interest, did you replace with another Officejet?

Yes, I purchased an Officejet 4635 yesterday at Costco for about $90. But the Canon they had looked pretty nice as well. Almost bought it.
I must say, I think I might have to opt for the "HP Instant Ink" thing. That seems like a pretty cool deal to me.
However, I'm going to try this one out for a while before I make the plunge.
I just hate that my past 3 HP printers have ALL done this -- suddenly decided to die.
