Product: Pavilion laptop and Hp Deskjet

I have just bought an HP Pavilion laptop and it is up and running nicely.  The problem I am having is printing.  I send a document to the printer and it seems to be going through but doesn't print.  I then check the printer queue but there is nothing on it.

Can anyone help with suggestions of how to get the documents to print?
