Evny 4500
Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard

Suddenly I can't scan or copy. I get an error message saying that the scanner is busy. When I try to copy, nothing at all happens. It's an envy 4500. It still prints from my computer. I need help. It seems that the download for diagnostics is only for PC. I've done a hard boot. In fact, I've done several of them. Same thing. If there is anything else I can do which might fix this problem I'd love to know about it. Thanks.

Hello, @MartiG – Hope you are well 🙂

Thanks for reaching out. This is a great place to find the help you need, from other users, HP experts, and other support personnel.

Going through your post, it looks like a scanner failure issue with your printer. This happen when the printer gets insufficient power to the scanner or when there is a mechanical issue with the printer scanner mechanism. Try the steps mentioned below to try and fix the issue:

  • Remove the cartridges from the printer.
  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Remove USB cable, if present.
  • Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
  • Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord (This is important) and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.

If the steps mentioned in the document fails to resolve the issue, I am afraid the issue could be with the printer hardware. I would suggest you contact HP phone support to set up a service for the printer.

You can visit http://www.support.hp.com/contact-hp and fill in your product details to get the tech support number.

If you have any troubles, let me know and I will do my best to help!

Cheers 🙂

I followed the above steps exactly. At first it seemed like it might be fixed. I hit copy and heard things swing into action. Paper was pulled in and there was the usual sound coming from inside.  But that's it. The screen said "copying...1-1" but nothing happened beyond that . I finally hit cancel, the paper came out with nothing on it, and the screen still says "caneling."  Thing is, there was some progress in that nothing at all was happening before. Well... Progress if you don't count that it's still not working. :Crying:

Edited to add:  I had to restart it  in order to get it to print from the computer. I don't suppose there is any reason to try a scan if it won't copy.

@klgrtrout

Thank you for the update.

I'm afraid, it seems to be an issue with the printer hardware.

Here, I recommend you to Contact HP Technical Support over the Phone for further assistance.
