So my deskjet 5850 is no longer supported for windows 10. And i have six cartriges I would love to use - HP 56. I figure I can get a used printer cheaper than buying more ink. What printers can go with windows 10 plus use 56 ink cartridge> or are there any printers using 56 that are compatible with macbook air?  either way?  Thanks!!!

The Deskjet 5850 should be usable in Windows 10 using the HP Deskjet 5600 or 5500 driver as described in the document here.  There are a couple of Deskjet 5600 drivers available, I generally find the HP versions have more capabilities.

To answer your original question, the following are printers that use the HP 56 cartridges.  Most of them are also usable in Windows 10:

Finally, if the cartridges are new, unopened, unexpired genuine HP cartridges you may be able to exchange them for cartridges for a new HP printer.  For cartridge exchange of HP cartridges unopened and in-warranty see the post here.

Thanks so much. i did try alternate drivers - none worked on windows 10 with my 5850. not sure why. however - thanks for your list of possibliities. helpful!!!

The Deskjet 5850 was/is a nice printer, it would be a shame to toss it if it is still working.

How were you trying to use it with Windows 10 - USB, wired network or wireless?  Do you remember any details of the issues you had?

Bob H - thanks. So when we did download a supposedly compatible driver - what happened was it would "print" but not actually use ink. so it would come out with a blank page after goign through all the printing.  And when i tried a "universal driver" the tech guy walked me through - it jsut said something like - printer error.

I agree - it feels totally wrong to let go of a printer that is still working - esp when I have loads of ink... I would donate it to Salv Army and hopefully they can find a use for it.. but still....

         appreciate your time, d

A printer going through the motions of printing but the page being blank would typically be caused by the cartridges not working.  You might try printing a test page as shown in the document here.  If the page is blank the issue would be with the cartridge. the built in tests do not depend on the driver.  If the page is blank you might try removing the print cartridges and put them nozzles down in separate coffee cups with about 1" of hot water.  Let them soak for about ten minutes, then remove and gently blot the cartridge on a damp tissue.  Dry the electrical contacts and then put them back in the printer and try another test page.

Bob - thanks again for trying. what you said makes sense ...except the test page works. AND my ancient lenovo with windows 7 still prints perfectly with my hpdeskjet. so I think it is directly connected to windows. and for whatever reason the basic driver will not do its magic. so... I am afraid it's tme to give it up as much as I hate to do that. hopign someone at salv army can deal with it.  thanks. d

Bob - thanks again for trying. test page works. and it works on my old windows 7. it's i guess the driver. time to giveit up. appreciate your time. d

As much as I like shopping thrift stores for old but still nice HP printers 🙂  there is one other thing you might try.  Use the same procedure as above, but rather than the Deskjet 5600 series try the Deskjet 5550.  If that does not work try the Deskjet 990c.  All three of these should be compatible with the Deskjet 5850.

One other thing to check - if you are connecting by USB make sure you are using a USB 2.0 port on the computer if you have a choice.  While USB 3.0 is backward compatible with USB 2.0 in theory I have seen cases where USB 2.0 ports work while USB 3.0 ports do not.
