I've reinstalled the drivers on a number of occasions and still can't get the thing to scan or even show a scan utility in the controllers ... never had this problem before with a printer ... anyone know if I've bought a dud or just am one?

How do you connect your printer ? Have you install the following Software Feature and Driver yet ?

Thanks for that ... but I'm using a macbook pro ... mountain lion 10.7.5 ... could it be that the hp photosmart printer I use at another location needs to be uninstalled first ... at present I connect via wifi router

Update: just spent 40mins on chat with HP support. Have been printing wirelessly from day 1, & while it seems it should also scan wirelessly, I could only get it to scan via USB. Still it's a solution that worked for me...
Routes to find scanner application (which weren't obvious to me):
1/ Apple (top left) > system preferences > print & scan > scan
2/ Finder > Applications > Hewlett-Packard > HP Scan
3/ Finder > Applications > Image Capture
The devices show up as different names in the pick list depending on whether it's wi-fi or USB & of course the wi-fi will fail to connect, so make sure you pick the correct one/try both.

I too have registered just to say thanks for saving me from suicide. I was tearing my hair out looking for a solution. Who would've guessed that path through the Apple logo? BTW, my Macook is now scanning through a wireless connection.

...spoke too soon. I am now unable to scan again, either wirelessly or wired. Therefore, unless anyone else can come up with the magic I shall have to try elsewhere.
