i got the new 8720 setup after some tense minutes installing the setup cartridges. i'm hooked to my pc via the usb cable. if i want instant ink i understand that i have to connect the printer directly to the router wirelessly. do i then have to leave the printer on all the time? i usually turn it on, print what i need and then turn it off. i do not always print every day.

Hi,
Normally you have to leave the printer ON for it to communicate with HP server. Please read more information about printer offline:

Hi HP Instalnt Ink require to connect the printer to your network indeed.
You may connect it to your wireless or wired network regarding of the PC connection, you may keep it connected to your PC with a USB as long as the printer is also connected to your network, you may see its requirements listed below:
http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03767639
I would recommend keeping the printer powered on while using the service, it is not recommended to keep it off most time as the printer will not be able to properly communiate with HP's servers any time to ensure the ink usage is correctly delivered to HP so a replacement cartridge will be sent on time..

Shlomi
