LaserJet M1522nf MFP won't scan over network after update to Windows 8.1 Pro

LaserJet M1522nf MFP won't scan after update to Windows 8.1 Pro

I have upgraded the firmware. Uninstalled the printer, reinstalled the printer.

All scanning options report scanner cannot be located.

I have tried:

    1. HP Scan and Capture

    2. Windows 8.1 Scan

    3. HP SCAN

    4. Windows 8.1 Fax and Scan

All these options work if I stand in front of the printer with a laptop and plug in an USB cable. However, there are six people needing to use this from their networked workstations.

ALL FIREWALLS HAVE BEEN DISABLED DURING TESTING.

FIREMWARE IS LATEST VERSION.

WINDOWS 8.1 PRO (32 AND 64 BIT) has all it's Windows updates and Store updates.

Scan to... button on M1522nf reports, "Not Set Up on PC"

How are we able to scan over the network from this device after upgrading to Windows 8.1?

P.S. This thread has been moved from Laserjet to Multifunction and All-in-One. - Hp Forum Moderator

Scan to button will not work on Win 8.1.  The scan to button requires the HPToolbox software to be setup and installed which I believe is not compatible with Win8.1.  You will have to initiate scans from your scanning software instead of the control panel of the printer.

Besides, you need to setup a network installation of the printer if you hope to use it that way.  Make sure the ports for your printer are configured to the IP address of the printer while on the same network.  If everything is lined up correctly then your applications should be able to pull scan jobs from the printer.  Push scan jobs like from the Scan to Button will not be an option if you are using Win8.1.

Re: LaserJet M1522nf MFP won't scan over network after update to Windows 8.1 Pro

I am able to network print on this device, and the Windows 8.1 scanning software is getting it's connection details from the network configured printer.

Where can I manually configure the ports for the network scanning?

Which of the many Windows 8.1 scanning options, HP Scan, Windows Fax and Scan, or Windows Scan should I be using? They all have the M1522nf available as a device to select, but they all report they can't communicate with the printer. Sorry I don't have the error in front of me as I'm not at that location today.

Re: LaserJet M1522nf MFP won't scan over network after update to Windows 8.1 Pro

Managing the scanner manually is usually a pain.  Sometimes  you can access the Scanners and Cameras area to view the scanning profiles that are currently installed.   However that utility frequently breaks on me.  Its normally easier to go through the software installation wizard and let HP find and setup the printer as a network printer.

The ports I was referring to can be found under the Devices and Printers folder.  When you access the Printer Properties for your printer you can see and manage the ports tab.  Here is where you need to have the IP address or network name for the printer entered instead of a USB port.

HP Scan is the application designed to work with your printer, you should try to use that whenever possible.  HP Scan has the advantage of being able to scan directly to PDF where the free MS scan applications do not.  You can also use whatever 3rd party scanning application meets your needs the best.  Try them all out and see which one you like the most.  If these applications are not able to communicate with the printer then no other scan apps will either.  Focus on running the network installation from the HP Software and let the wizard do the heavy lifting for you.

Re: LaserJet M1522nf MFP won't scan over network after update to Windows 8.1 Pro

After many hours of false starts, I found a solution to this problem.  I have Windows 8.1 64-bit.  Forget Windows 8.1 drivers.  Go to this page:

http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/readIndex?sp4ts.oid=3442752&swLangOid=8&swEnvOid=4132

and download the HP LaserJet M1522 Series Full Solution EMEA4.  Others may work as well, but this one worked for me for US English.

Then just do the autorun and let it complete.  Takes a long time.  But it discovered my printer, and now I have a HP Scan item in the menu, and scanning from the device over the network to my PC works.

Hope this helps someone else facing this same issue.  HP needs to identify this as a working solution.  I found numerous posts of people not being able to scan from their M1522N, and the solution is simple.

Re: LaserJet M1522nf MFP won't scan over network after update to Windows 8.1 Pro

My solution to the problem (network scanning did not work after upgrading to Win 10 from 7) was this:

Step 1: Uninstall all software related to HP printers. Go to Control Panel > Add or remove programs and make sure there is no HP programs of the printer installed. Click 'uninstall' if any.

Step 2: Delete the printer installation from 'Printers and Devices'. Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers. If your HP printer is there, right click on it and select 'remove device'.

Step 3: Delete remaining drivers. Stay at 'Printers and Devices'. Select any other printer (e.g. XPS Writer) and click on the option 'printer server properties’ that appears in the top of the window. Move at the tab 'drivers' in the window that pops up. Select one by one any HP related drivers and click 'remove'. When asked, select 'driver and package' and hit ok. repeat for all HP drivers.

Step 4: Manually delete leftovers. Go to C:\Program Files and look for any 'Hewlett-Packard' folder. Delete those folders unless they contain other HP software non-related to your printer. You need administrative privileges to perform this task. Check both 'Program files' and 'Program files (x86)' if you have an 64bit version of Windows 10. Also, check the subfolder 'Common files' for any 'Hewlett-Packard' folders and delete them as well.

Step 5: Extract the contents of the installation file and move them directly at the root of C: disk. Locate the downloaded file 'M1522series-win7-full-solution-EMEA2-v4.3' (your EMEA may be different depending on location and language preferences) and extract it in a folder of the same name. Move that folder on C:\ .

Step 6: Clean the registry. Open the registry editor by typing 'regedit' in the search box next to the start menu. Expand the 'CURRENT_USER' and 'LOCAL_MACHINE' keys as well as the 'SOFTWARE' subkeys. Delete any 'Hewlet-Packard' entry. Do not delete 'HP' entries or entries that do not appear to refer to the printers. You may backup the entries before deleting in case something goes wrong: right click on them and select 'export', then save them temporarily on the desktop.

Step 7: Perform further clean-up with HP's utilities. Go to the folder previously extracted  (C:\M1522series-win7-full-solution-EMEA2-v4.3) and browse to util>CCC. Locate the executable 'scrubber.exe' and run it. There is no window popping up but apparently it works in the background. Do the same with the .bat file 'unistallL4', hit Enter in the command prompt window that opens to continue with the clean up.

Step 8: Delete temporary files. Type " %temp% " (without the quotes) at the address bar of a file explorer window. You will be transferred to C:\Users\user_name\AppData\Local\Temp. Select all files there (Ctrl + A) and then hit delete. Skip files that cannot be deleted.

Step 9: Restart your PC.

Step 10: Run the installer. Go to the folder you created at C:\. It is always a good option to temporarily disable your firewall and antivirus program. Run the 'autorun' program and follow the setup wizard. You may choose 'advanced install' and deselect unwanted software, such as 'customer participation program', 'buy supplies' and 'hp update'. Your installation should finish without trouble. You may skip setting up the fax if you don't use it and cancel the 'product registration' window. Make sure you select 'network installation' when prompted (if your machine is connected via lan cable).

Step 11. Make sure everything works fine. Restart your PC and check scanner and printer work properly. You may now delete the files that were moved in the recycle bin. Keep the registry backups for a while and then delete them as well.
