I have 21 Laserjet 600 M602 printers deployed in labs around our university campus. About 1/2 of these printers will stop responding to pings (and any other network traffic) after a day or two. The others seem to stay alive.
A powercycle of the printer will bring it back, but the users in the labs don't realize that, and it's a problem. The printer still says "ready", and appears to be alive, but isn't reachable via the network interface.
The only obvious thing about the failing printers is that they were purchased / manufactured more recently than the others.

It turns out that some of the printers that are failing have not been renewing their dhcp leases. Our network switches automatically block the ports which don't have valid dhcp connections, so these printers work until the lease times out and then get dropped from the network. I'm not sure why only some of them are having this problem. Perhaps it's a configuration issue as well as a jetdirect firmware defect. It will take some more investigation.

did you ever figure out what this issue was? our laserjet 600 m601 stops responding constantly, and our best fix is to disconnect and reconnect the ethernet cord. Sometimes a power cycle will work but not always. Any thoughts?
