HP Laserjet 4L
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

This printer was working fine yesterday.  I right clicked "Rename" (a regrettable mistake),  to eliminate the words '-copy 1'.  I then tried to print a page and keep getting error messages..... "Printer is in error state"  and one to the effect that the 'printer couldn't print the test page'.

I deleted and then hit  'Add a Printer',  to re-install.

I clicked 'Add a local priner with manual settings'

I said 'Use an existing port'... it defaults to LPT1.  When that didn't work I tried USB001,  because I am using a cable that is parallel on one end,  USB on the computer end.  (I've used this cable with this printer and computer for years. )

I used the 'Windows Update' to get a driver for this exact model.  I highlight the model,  then

Clicked 'replace the current driver'

I try printing a test page and get one of the error messages above.  There is no sign of communication between the computer and the printer.

Again;  This printer was working perfectly until I renamed the printer.

Any ideas?
