Found that all you have to do is pry off the lower hinge top plate with a small flat screwdriver then remove the coil springs underneath and the top hinge then reseats. You will still only be hinged on one side and you will have to be careful when changing the print cartridges, but the unit will work. Hope that this helps.

Thanks for the reply, but I have already fixed it so it is working now.

Have a good day!

The 'remove the lower hlf of the hinge' solution (pry the pastic out and then pull out the two coil springs) worked for for me.  Duct tape across the back and we're done.... until the cartridges run out, at least.

We'll probably replace the printer then...

Mine did the same; left hinge. I pulled the soft center piece out with a pliers. Two springs underneath with a tension that defy compression. I left the piece out and the top fits flush a d operates fine. Just use two hands to lift lid to replace ink cartridges from now on.

Yesterday the 6480 printer that was my daughters was showing cartridge jam, while checking the cartridge jam, the hinge on the right side broke and then the left side, this is the second one of these I have had while working with the cartridges the hinges have broken, and there is a sensor to let the printer know the door is open and will not function with the door open error.  I was planning on buying a new all in one printer combination that would auto duplex, but not tomorrow.  The hinges are not strong enough for this printer.  Poor design, I will call HP and see what they will offer me to help replace two printers.  i will have to used the take out the springs and duck tape and only open if the cartridges need attention.  Has anyone had HP offer to send replacement parts?

Thanks

Me too.  Right side.  I was able to remove the hinge so the top closes flush.  I was thinking about getting the replacement which seems to be the Officejet Pro 6978.
