HP Scan 3 crashes a few seconds after I hit the scan button. I am on Mac OSX 10.6.8 and using HP Desckjet 1050.
OS is fully up to date.
I have repaired permisions and restarted.
I have deleted/uninstalled all previous HP software.
I have downloaded the newest version of the HP Deskjet 1050 from the HP website.
I have turned of my printer, unplugged for 60 seconds and reconected it.
None of this seems to work. This is really frustrating. I got the All In One thing because I needed a printer, photocopier and scanner. Can anyone help me out?
Thanks in advance.

Are you trying to scan from the front of the printer? It likely will not work, try starting a scan from your Mac.

Thanks for your reply.
No, I am trying to use HP Scan 3 to scan a document. I am opening the programme, hitting the scan button on the HP Scan 3 programme, and then finding that the HP Scan 3 programme crashes.

Let's reset the printing system:
- Go to System Preferences > Print & Fax
- Right (or control) click in the rectangle listing your printers and select Reset Printing System.
WARNING - this will delete ALL of your printers!
- Select the plus sign to re-add a printer. Look for the printer, select it and wait until the "Add" button becomes available. Click it.

Tried that, no joy. To be clear, I:
1. Opened stystem prefs.
2, Open Print and Fax.
3, Right clicked on the rectangle box containing my printers and reset it.
4, Added the HP Deskjet 1050 to the list.
5, Tested the Scanner from the Sys Pref/ Print and Fax winder - worked.
6, Opened HP Scan 3, tried to scan. HP Scan quit afte a couple of seconds.
Could it be that there is a problem with HP Scan 3?

I may be wrong but Scan 3 sounds like it is for pre-10.6. Are you sure you uninstalled all of the HP software and loaded the Full Feature software for 10.6?

Yes. I installed the programmes that were supplied on a disk with the printer. The disk had printed on the front "HP Deskjet 1050 All-In-One J4010 series". I did not download any programmes from any other sources, for any other model, and try to use them. This would, I think, be a bit silly.
After installing the programmes for my Deskjet 1050, and finding that HP Scan 3 (which was supplied on the disk that came with the printer, and was included in the suite of programmes for the Deskjet 1050) repeatedly crashed, I went through the stages in my first message - that is, I repaired disk permission, restared both the printer etc. I re-installed the programs. Nothing.
I then uninstalled the HP programmes and downloaded the newest version from the HP website. To avoid any confusion, I downloaded and installed the newest version of the software for the HP Deskjet 1050 all-In-One printer. The problem persists.
I did not instal the package for Lion os.
I am now considering returning my HP printer and replacing it with something that works.

OK, you installed from the disc. Was the disc marked as being compatible with 10.6?
By the way, I never install from discs when there are other options. The disc sofware is almost always out of date. This is not just for printers, its for virtually everything.

I'm having the same problem but with an HP Deskjet 2050, running OS X 10.6.8. Downloaded the latest printer software via software update. HP Scan 3 crashes just after hitting the scan button. It will also crash if I disconnect the USB cable, open HP scan 3, then re-connect the cable. Still able to print successfully, just HP scan 3 is crashing.
Last time I scanned something successfully was a few months ago, so it's possible it may not be compatible with the latest iteration of 10.6....
