Can someone tell me the type of cable I would need to be able to air print my hp laser jet 4p compatible with my home network. I understand that a USB cable will work except there is no USB port on the printer.

You need to be able to connect it to your network so you might consider using a JetDirect 300x attached to the printer by parallel cable and plugged into a wired port on your Router.
Not sure if that will get you going with Apple Air Print, but it will get the 4P connected to the network.
