I have the 3050a and am using airprint to be able to print from my ipad3. I want to print in black ink only but I cant find where to change the print preferences! Any ideas? I've downloaded the HP software to my mac to try and change it there but still no option is given.
Help please

You cannot make this adjustment to set black printing only from your iPad, sorry.

Yup, but only with prints sent from the Air, not from the iPad.
To do this, start a print job (File > Print or command-P), choose the Plain Paper, Fast Draft, Black & White option

To add, Although it is not possible to print using black ink only using Apple Airprint, you may do so by using the HP ePrint Home & Biz app:
Be aware that printing using the black ink only supported for document file types (MS Office, PDF, Web Pages. TXT) and not for any image file.
