C309a - Can't download driver from Apple Update

I uninstalled my software, including current driver for My HP Photosmart C309A printer on my iMac with 10.7 installed. I've tried to wirelessly install the printer, and the printer is located by the computer, but Apple Update goes to an error advising that it doesn't have the software and to contact the printer manufacturer (HP) for the driver. HP doesn't have the Mac driver since it is supposed to be on Apple Update. I've restarted several times with no success. I've also tried to install the printer on my MacBook Air running 10.7 with the same results. I can't find anything else on the internet to address this so I've come here for help. So please HELP!

Thanks in advance.

Re: C309a - Can't download driver from Apple Update

Hi,

Doenload and install the Full HP Printer Drivers 2.8 package from Apple:

http://support.apple.com/downloads/DL907/en_US/HPPrinterDrivers2.8.dmg

Once completing the installation, enter System Preferences > Print & Scan.

Click the Plus sign and add the listed printer.

Re: C309a - Can't download driver from Apple Update

I was able to successfully download and install the package, but when I go to add the printer, it still wants to find and download the software from Apple. I don't see a way to assign it manually.

Re: C309a - Can't download driver from Apple Update

Let's try repairing the disk permissions to avoid any installation issues:

Step one: Repair the Printing System of the Mac OS X:

*Be aware that resetting the printer system will remove any existing print queue and reset any customized driver settings.

On the Apple menu, click System Preferences .
On the View menu, click Print & Fax . The Print & Fax dialog box opens.
Right-click (or Ctrl + click) your product in the Printers list in the left panel, and then click Reset printing system .
Click OK to confirm the reset.
Type your user Name and Password .
Click OK . The printing system resets.

Step two: Repair the active partition disk permissions:

1. Open the the Applications folder.
2. Go to the Utilities folder.
3. Double-click on Disk Utility.
4. Select the hard drive containing the boot volume.
5. Go to the First Aid tab and select Repair Disk Permissions.
Note: This process may take several minutes depending on the Mac and amount of permissions that need to be repaired. The Progress Log will indicate when the process has been completed.

Step three: Reinstall the HP Printer Drivers

Install the HP Printer Drivers again, then add the printer..

I believe now it will add the Print Queue as expected.

Please let me know of any problem,

Shlomi

Re: C309a - Can't download driver from Apple Update

The C309A printer is not listed in my currently installed printers. It only recognizes it as one I can add through the network when I click the add (+) button. Otherwise I ran through the instructions below...

When I go to add the printer, it still wants to download and install the software from apple. Then it can't find it and the following error shows:

The software for this printer is currently unavailable. Please contact the printer’s manufacturer for the latest software.

Thanks for all of the help. Not sure why it insists on trying to find the software (driver) from Apple when it's already installed.

Re: C309a - Can't download driver from Apple Update

Hi,

I am sorry to hear you still facing some issues.

As i can understand, even after Repeating the Disk Permissions the driver does not get installed by completing the installation once again, please correct me otherwise.

Do you have a single harddisk partition on your Mac?

(While clicking Go > Computer, can you see only one harddisk or more than one?)

If you see more that one boot partition, please click the Apple Icon, then click About This Mac.

Click More Info, than click System Report.

From the left pane, click the software section title

On the right pane you will see the Boot Name listed.

Make sure this is the boot name you selected during the HP Printer Drivers installation and while repairing the Disk Permissions, otherwise repeat those steps.

If there is no change, i would suggest you to temporary create a new Administrator user account, install the package from the new user account and try adding the printer. Per your details it seems to me more likely as any permission issue preventing the drivers installation.

You may create a new user as following:

Enter System Preferences > Accounts

Click the Plus sign to add a new account (You may have to click the lock icon first to modify the settings)

Set the New Account as Administrator and provide any temporary name.

Once the account been created, click the Apple icon, then click Log Out and select the newly created user.

You may access the printer drivers download (Assuming it been downloaded to the Downloads folder) by clicking the Go menu, then click Computer.

Select your partition and then enter the Users folder.

Enter the original user folder, than enter the Download folder and launch the HP Printer Drivers 2.8 package installation.

Try adding the printer within the new account and check for any change.

If you were able to add the printer on the new user, log off and try adding it on the original user as well..

If you still get the same results, I would suggest you to contact Apple Support as it seems like a permission problem within the Mac OS.

Please let me know of any change,

Shlomi

Re: C309a - Can't download driver from Apple Update

I went to the Apple website. The trick was since I couldn't reset the printing system by clicking on "my product" (since it wasn't in the printer list) I had to reset the printing system by right clicking in the printer area not on another printer and reset all the printing system items. Anyway... that did the trick. Thanks again for all of your help!

Re: C309a - Can't download driver from Apple Update

I didn't understand the solution. How do I reset a printer when this is a new MacAir and it finds the HP I can't get the driver for?

Re: C309a - Can't download driver from Apple Update

drush4th,

Just use the following steps.

I would recommend that you download the driver through Apple Software Update.

Before we do that, we want to uninstall any incompatible software you may have installed on your computer by running the HP Uninstaller located under Applications > HP or the Hewlett-Packard folder.

After you do that, we will want to download the drivers. The drivers for your product are available through Apple Software Update.

Before you do anything, temporarily unplug the printer's USB cord from either the printer or the computer. Next, check for any available HP Update's by clicking the Apple icon and then Software Update.

If any update could not be retrieved, download the full HP Printer Drivers v.2.14 from Apple:

Once you have completed the installation you will want to plug your printer back in. After the printer is plugged back in, go into your print settings under System Preferences > Print & Scan. To add the printer, click the plus sign. You should see your printer listed here. Select it. If underneath the printer you see "Use:”.  Make sure that says the name of your printer and not AirPrint. Click Add down in the bottom right hand corner.

Best of luck,

Kyle
