I have continuing problems getting my C4480 to scan. Every time it gives an error on the Mac Book saying it cannot communicate with the printer.
I have uninstalled via the HP uninstaller, emptied the trash, reinstalled and performed the device setup. I have checked that the device will copy, and it does. It prints perfectly. I have tried updating software, but it says no updates available.
When I open HP Photosmart Studio, the import and scan buttons are operational, but the "edit" etc buttons are all grayed out and unusable.
I am very frustrated--any advice? Mac os 10.6.2

Photosmart studio is not compatible with 10.6.2, you are using the 10.5 software which will not work.
You need to uninstall the software, make sure the applications/hewlett-packard folder is deleted, empty trash, reboot, check for apple updates, then install the c4480 10.6 software from the hp website. Then there will be a new app called HP Scan that you would use.

I don't think the OS is the problem here. I have the same problem with OS 10.5.8 and have had it since I got my Photosmart C4480 a year ago. It works perfectly for printing/copying, but the scanning functions are inaccessible. I have reinstalled the software several times now. I'd love to know if anyone has ideas.
Thanks.

I came on the board because I was having the same exact problem. Another thread provided a suggestion and it worked for me.
-Download the HP Photosmart Aio Full Feature Software for Mac OS X. This is the HP Suite for Mac. It will probably look a bit different from the one you currently have installed (it was for me). It can be found here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloa
-Once installed, unplug the power cord from the back of the C4480 for a full minute.
-Plug it back in.
-Run HP Scan and try to scan a document or photo.

Jumping on this bandwagon a i now have the same problem - my partner and I have both had Macbook Pros working perfectly with our HP Photosmart C4500 printer/scanner/copier for a couple of years, but after I installed Snowleopard (on both Macbooks) there is no longer communication between the scanner and the Macbooks.
I have uninstalled the HP stuff and re-installed it, searched for, and installed, updates, but the same problem persists. The scanner function on the HP works fine when copying documents or photos, but there is no communication with the Macs. Why????
Any help hugely appreciated.
