I'm on a mac. The printer was fine until virgin gave me a superhub. I was on a netgear router before. Now it says printer is off line.

Yes, you will have to re-install the printer using the HP software. Download and install the latest software for your printer from the "Support & Drivers" link at the top of this page.

Oh, during the printer setup, you need to connect the USB cable between your computer and your printer. It is only a temporary connection so that the computer can communicate network settings (network name and password) to the printer.

This is what my steps are...
Connect printer to mac via usb
Turn on printer
Open Finder & Navigate to Applications/Hewlett-Packard/Device Utilities/HP Setup Assistant
Double click HP Setup Assistant to run it
Select my device & click continue
The next screen says The selected device is compatible with wireless networks. If you want to configure the device check the box before continuing
I check the box & continue
It is at this point I get the message To configure the network settings of the selected device, please connect it temporarily via USB. The device can be disconnected from the USB once the network settings are transferred.
I am stuck at this point - really hope you can help.

Yup, do not connect the USB cable until the software asks you to do so. The way you are doing it will install a USB instance of the printer.

The thing is tho, when I run the setup assistant it says "if youe device is not connected to the computer, connect it now & make sure it is turned on"
I tried it without connecting to the computer selecting wireless network, but it says my device is not supported by my installer.

Oh, are you using the CD that came with the printer? Don't do that - it is ancient.
Download and install the latest software for your printer from the "Support & Drivers" link at the top of this page.
