I only did the upgrade over the wireless network when I tested the patch.
Is the C4580 connected wirelessly to your home network? How about our WinXP system? Is it connected to the network and by USB cable to the printer? If so, let me suggest unplugging the USB cable, install the printer SW for a network connection and then run the patch program.

I don't know if I can be of much more help.
Can you print wirelessly? If so, I might suggest unplugging the USB connection, deleting the USB print queue (temporarily -- you can add back later) from the printer folder and try one more time to run the patch program.
If this fails, your next step is to call HP support (sorry about that).
