    Could someone tell me:  can you install an old (but good) Deskjet 540 on a MacBook running OS 10.4.11?

Yes, you can install the HP Deskjet 540C in Mac OS X 10.4.11

 

Apple included a Gimp Print driver for the 540 C in 10.4 (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1468?#hpdrivers)
