I also have OS X 10.6 which came installed on this iMac running with the F4280 connected via USB. Before coming to these forums, attempting a scan would only cause a dialog with "An unknown error occurred" to appear. The F4280 item in Print & Fax had a Scanner tab, but the tab was inactive and claimed no scanner was available. Neither Image Capture nor Preview detected the F4280. After following the advice (mostly copied and pasted posts from PrintDoc), the only differences I can find are I no longer have any of the HP software installed and the scanner tab no longer shows up for the F4280 in Print & Fax. I would say I am now further from a solution.
Also, a word of caution for other users pursuing a solution. PrintDoc does not warn you that Reset Printing System will remove all of the printers you have ever added for your Mac. It also did me no good. It only set me on the nice distracting task of re-adding all of the networked printers I had previously used.
