When I try to scan from the printer Control Panel (touch screen), the device gives the following error: "The connection to the computer has been lost or the hp scan application cannot detect the OCR software. check the computer screen for more details."
When I scan from the Mac, using the HP Scan application, I get a complete scan (but it takes longer than it should).
I've tried reinstalling the apps, and drivers, deleting and re-adding the printer. Still, I have the same issue (and on two different Macs).
Ideas?

Yeah, scanning from the printer may not work well yet. Just scan from your Mac until it is sorted out.
Does your printer have the latest updates?

I do have the latest firmware, as I added AirPrint capabilities just last week. Hopefully, there is a plan for another update, as I really wanted to use this to scan directly into Evernote and OfficeDrop.

Restart the Mac, Printer and Router
Apple menu> Software update.... Install any updates
If that doesn't work complete these steps:
- Applications
- HP uninstall **Warning the step below this one will remove ALL HP software**
- Hold CTRL, Option and CMD on your keyboard while clicking uninstall to remove all software
- Apple menu> System Preferences> Print and Fax
- Hold CTRL and click in the white box on the left hand side.
- Release CTRL and then click on reset print system
- Applications> Utilities> Disk Utility
- Verify disk permissions
- Repair disk permissions,
- Download the newest software from HP
- http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software11/COL34834/
mp-86377-2/OJ_AIO_08_6500_E710nz_Net_Full_Mac_WW_7 ... - Install and try scan from printer again.
**Although I work for HP, I do not represent them in these forums**

Ok. I had this problem about connection lost to printer or OCR software not installed.
I have being several days figuring out what was wrong.
What I did on Windows 7 is to:
1. Run services.msc
2. Make sure Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) is running.
3. If not, and try to start service, it showed me and error 1068.
4. WIA is dependent on other services, so you need to make sure this two are running
a) Remote Procedure Call and
b) Shell Hardware Protections
5. Then try to run WIA services
6. You should have your scanner working wireless by now.
Make sure to activate scanner for testing scanning from the HP Software Scan Menu.
Let me know how it goes for you people.
I was with customer service on phone for about 2 hours and even with remote access they were not able to solve this.
So, let's hope this helps other on troubleshooting the SCAN problem with the HP 6500a Printer

I've tried the clean install of the mac software mulitple times, and after a while I still cannot scan from the AIO. Printing and scanning from my mac works.
Latest firmware, software installed, good wifi connection, and a static ip used.
It looks like the mac interfact to the applescript files is not firing for some reason.
BTW to the poster above....I thinl the OP had a question about a mac install

This looks like it is going down the path to solve my problem!! (spent several hours with HP support to no avail). I do not have Shell Hardware Protection. What is it and more importantly where do I get this and get it running?
Thanks much!

I had the same problem, I could not even start the HP scanner software. So:
1 run services.msc
2. from the list choose shell hardware protection and get it run
3. get WIA run from the same list
Now the scanner should work.

Steps advised by Essika on 01-26-2011 at 04:55pm
Restarting Mac, Printer and Router only fixed the problem temporarily so I used the steps quoted and it worked!
I have only scanned twice from panel so far so hopefully it remains successful. I have had constant error messages saying OCR software is missing and then rebooting fixes it sometimes and then it comes back again. Fingers crossed this is a final fix! Thanks very much!
