HP 8450 driver and new Instant Dry HP Premium Plus photo paper

[ Edited ]

I've been a happy user of HP Premium Plus Photo paper with my HP 8450 for some time.

Now HP have brought out a new version, "Instant Dry".

The colours are slightly off, so I did some research and found this quote from HP Customer Service "For printers purchased prior to October 2011, the recommended print mode for new HP Premium Plus Photo Paper is “HP Advanced Photo”. "

Fair enough, except that the Paper Type/Quality option in the Print dialogue does not offer me Advanced Photo paper as an option.

How do I get the driver to offer me Advanced Photo paper as an option?

Mac OSX 10.6.8

HP 8450

HP Inkjet 6 Driver 1.3.1

Depending on what options you have available in your print menu would determine what paper type to choose. I recommend selecting the best paper option available that includes "Glossy." "Glossy Photo Paper" would be excellent choice.

Best of luck!

Thanks Sean, but I'm not sure I understand your answer.

The options I get in the print menu are as folows :

Selecting "HP Premium Plus Photo paper" with the old type of paper gave me great results. However, selecting "HP Premium Plus Photo paper" with the new, "Instant Dry" Premium Pus paper gives a rather poor colour balance - unacceptable for good quality photo printing, which is what I use my 8450 and Premium Plus paper for.

HP Customer Care recommend selecting "HP Advanced Photo paper" when using new "Instant Dry" Premium Plus paper in my printer - but my driver does not seem to provide me with that option. What I want to know, is how can I get the driver to give me the paper option that HP recommend I use?

What do I do?

- download a new driver?

- stock pile the old Premium Plus paper?

- give up with HP and buy a new printer from Epson?

FreddyFrog,

You picture didnt seem to attach properly. Have you checked to see if their are any updates available? What application are you printing from? Try switching to a different application to see if it shows you any other options. You should have the advanced option with 10.6.8.

Also check out this document , it goes in depth on color management in OS X  Mac OS: Advanced Color Management HP Next Generation Inkjet Print Products

Thanks,

SeanS

Re: HP 8450 driver and new Instant Dry HP Premium Plus photo paper

Thanks Sean, sorry you cannot see my screen shot - it shows up fine on Safari & Chrome on my computer. Anyway, what it shows is the list of paper that print menu gives me, which is :

  • HP Premium Plus Photo Paper
  • HP Premium Photo Paper
  • HP Photo Paper
  • HP Everyday Photo Paper, Semi-gloss
  • HP Everyday Photo Paper, Matte
  • HP Premium High-gloss Film
  • Other photo paper

No HP Advanced Photo Paper option.

The print menu is the same for all applications on Macs, I think its part of the operating system. I get the same list of paper options in Apple Aperture 3, Adobe Photoshop CS 5 and every other application.

I have just installed the HP Print Drivers 26 April 2012 update from Apple to make sure I'm up to date - it made no difference, still no HP Advanced Photo Paper option.

I've decided to buy a stock pile of the old paper and when that runs out I'll think about whether to buy a new Epson. Judging by the number of posts complaining about the new paper, I'm not alone.
