I have a HP 8500A plus Model number CM756A
It stopped working on both my IMAC and windows laptop both scanning and printing - the error message I got when trying to scan was:

If it has stoppoed working on both the Mac and the Windows systems, I suspect it is either a communication or hardware issue. How is the 8500A installed?

Is it a direct USB connection? Well if it's working on the Windows box.
Let's try to clean out the system and start from a clean slate.
Go to Applications/Hewlett Packard/ click on HP Uninstaller
Click on Continue
Highlight your device on the left pane
Hold the Ctrl, Opt and Cmd keys and click on Uninstall <<<< Scrubber Option
There will be a pop up that asks if you are sure you want to uninstall ALL hp software. (At this point, if you continue, any HP printers you have installed will need to be reinstalled)
Click Continue and let it finish
Restart your Mac
Now, run a Software Update.
Finally, download and install the "Full Featured" Driver and Software from the "Support & Drivers" link at the top of this page.
Follow the prompts and setup the printer again with a new printer queue.

Thank you for your responce.
I checked for updates - says none required. I have reinstalled software. This is from the link within the MAC printer set up - search for drivers as the driver on the HP web site:
for the Mac OS x ver 10.6 says it is only available on CD / DVD physical meadia and then when you hit that link I get error message:
error '80004005'
/Driver/dr_country_select.asp, line 37
So drivers installed from MAC search and printer is now appearing in the mac / system preferences / print & fax / printer list
Printer will now print and I can scan when I go into mac / system preferences / print & scan / printer list / choose 8500A / scan option
But when I try and open HP Scan 3 I get error message:
Process: HP Scan 3 [5027]
Path: /Applications/Hewlett-Packard/HP Scan 3.app/Contents/MacOS/HP Scan 3
Identifier: com.hp.scan.app

So I can print and scan again - thank you but HP Scan 3 doesn't work any more? Does all this make sence?
Thanks

Yeah, it makes sense. The HP software from hp.com is corrupted. Installing the software from ASU has got you working again. The scanning functions with that software are done through ICA. Try downloading and installing the software that is listed as 10.7. I believe this is backwards compatible with 10.6.
