Upgrade to 10.5 or 10.6 or 10.7?  Sorry, not tryng to be curt, but it is the solution.  10.4 is no longer supported by HP nor Apple, its probably time.

Some Macs cannot be upgraded to 10.5. For example, unless a computer has 512 MB of RAM, it isn't possible to use OS 10.5. Isn't there an archived piece of software for the DJ 1000 that will allow it to function with OS 10.4?

To the poster of the message: You might want to try Googling something like "old HP printer software." There are Websites that have archived versions of software. Of course, if the Deskjet 1000 never had any software that was compatible, you may be out of luck. Me, too. I wanted to get a new printer from my laptop (OS 5.8.11) and use the DJ 1000 with my old G4 Sawtooth desktop, which runs OS 10.4. It's worth a try, anyway.

You could by more RAM.....

Although your printer is not officially supported you can try this 3rd party HPIJS driver:
