I recently got a patch for my new desktop Mac to enable the printer for wireless printing. This worked great. Now I need to setup my wife's MacBook to do the same. Her MacBook is a couole of years old. Can you walk me thru the download and setup process ? She has other printers setup at school and I don't want to erase those printer drivers. Her MacBook won't recognize the 8600 with just the factory printer driver installed.

Get the latest software for her printer from the "Support & Drivers" link at the top of this page. I would send you to the exact page, but you did not state the version of OS X.

Hi,
As you mentioned that the MacBook is a couple of years old, please also verify it is compatible.
The printer supported by Mac OS X 10.5.8 and above.
You may find your OS version by clicking the Apple icon and then About This Mac.
If it meets the system requirements, the driver can be downloaded below:

Her operating system is Mac Os 10.6.7. I downloaded the Office Jet Pro 8600 software. Now I guess I run it and follow the directions ?

Yup, but first, from that same Apple menu, run Software Update. Her system should be at 10.6.8.
You may have to run Software Update several times over until it runs out of updates.
Next, download and install this: support.apple.com/kb/DL907
