Re: HP Officejet PRO 8500 Wireless + Mac OS Lion

I have faith in Vanricker. He has renewed enthusiasm. :smileyhappy:

As a workaround, you can scan to a NAS device? Not cheap, but it works in a pinch. Or you can install Parallels and Windows and scan to the share there and share that to your Mac. LOL

I've got an SD card in the printer that I've been scanning to but it's a pain in the butt and makes what should be a quick, simple process more time consuming and involved.

And although I understand your optimism about Vanricker's enthusiasm, perhaps you can understand my lack of optimism. I've been down this road of where the enthusiastic new support person thinks they're gonna make a difference and get long-standing problems resolved only to run against an established corporate bureaucracy that is more insterested in avoiding the issue and not letting anyone address the issue and actually fix it if it means admitting the fact that they've been screwing the pooch from day one.

Re: HP Officejet PRO 8500 Wireless + Mac OS Lion

Vanricker is not new. He actually posted back on 7/20/2011, but then nothing happened.

I just try to be optimistic since the opposite just gives me grey hairs.

I am frustrated too, and fortunately, I have a decent workaround, so I'm trying to solve this for the benefit of others and my clients.  Semes like other companies had the same problem, but I dont' know if they solved it either.  Seems like Apple should have gone to the printer manufacturers and worked with them and made sure it works or put a disclaimer on Lion that said certain devices won't work properly.

I'm not saying this is Apples fault (maybe it is if they could have easily licensed standard SMB from Samba) but the change they made is what broke this for a lot of companies.

Keeping my fingers crossed.  I'm rooting for you Vanricker.  Either a fix or a flat out statement that this won't be fixed and then we know where we stand.

Re: HP Officejet PRO 8500 Wireless + Mac OS Lion

I think that Apple gave the manufactures developer access to Lion before it came out so I'm not sure that the blame on Apple's side is as large as the printer manufacturers would like it to appear to be. As far as getting fix or a flat out statement that this won't be fixed, yes at least something straight forward would be nice, as opposed to the double-talk and lame excuses we've gotten up to this point. As you say, then at least we would have some sort of resolution.

Re: HP Officejet PRO 8500 Wireless + Mac OS Lion

True. I had the beta of Lion and knew right away it was a problem. I think the first word out of my mouth 2012-08-10art with F. However, on Apple forums I did a search earlier and other manufacturers had similar problems which seemed to indicate Apple might not have given them fair warning. Everyone blames everyone else rather than just fix the problem. *sigh*

On a similar note I use Exchange and in Lion, it stopped working properly when one has two accounts on the same server. I got an answer that Apple does not support Exchange. iOS works fine, but the full Mac OS X won't. Go figure. And this is something THEY can fix as it worked in SL, but they won't fix it and to make matters worse, in ML, they made it so the workaround we spent months discovering was rendered ineffective.

Yea, it's the same sort of crap I dealt with on the IBM-compatible side of things for over two decades.

Re: HP Officejet PRO 8500 Wireless + Mac OS Lion

The GOOD, the BAD and the UGLY.

The GOOD is that Network Scanning is working on the 8600.  I had posted something on an Apple forum and someone mentioned that it's working and that the firmware was fixed.  I had an 8500 at the start of this problem and then got an 8500A and finally an 8600.  I had assumed that the firmware was beasically the same on all of these and I never heard that the 8600 worked as poosed to the 8500 so I assumed it was still not working on the 8600.

The BAD is if you don't have an 8600 (andhave the 8500 and probably the 8500A also) then this is still a problem.

The UGLY is that the only way to fix this might be to get the 8600.  I know, I know.  We don't want o buy a new AIO if the old one works.  My reason for buying a new one was that I could get the newer features and gave the old one to my sister and then I got the 8600 and donated the 8500A to the kids' school.  I got the newer models since they were pretty cheap, but still a fair amount if the only reason is to get the scanning working.

I'm not trying to sell more HP products here, BUT, you can get the 8600 Plus for $299, on sale for $229, for $179 if you trade in an old printer for $50 credit.  SO for $179 and maybe sell your old printer to a Windows users (where the Network Scanning will work) for $100 and you are net $79 + tax and your hassle is gone.  The other issue as that the ink cartridges are different so if you have spares, you have to sell them with the printer.

So, getting back to the issue, IF you are having the problem and you happen to have an 8600 then it DOES work.  If you don't have the 8600 and have an 8500 series (I'm pretty sure the 8500A is in the same boat as the 8500) then maybe Vanricker can get to the bottom of this still.

At the moment, MY problem is solved.  I will continue to minitor this thread and if I can be of any assistance, I will do so so as to help the rest of you who have the problem.

One thing to keep in mind is that HP probably doesn't promise that the older models will be compatible with the newer OSes going foreward.  At some point, like Apple, they may drop support for certain models.  But being that they make more money on the ink than the printer, it would behoove them to keep the older models running as long as possible.

Perhaps there is some technical reason that this can't be mode to work on the older models and if so, maybe Vanricker can find that out once and for all.

[ Edited ]

I have the 8600 and Mountain Lion and it does NOT work for me. Maybe it works with Lion, but I wouldn't assume replacing your printer will work.

Re: HP Officejet PRO 8500 Wireless + Mac OS Lion

How does it not work for you?  Did you set up a Network Folder setting new and run the Save and Test?  I had problems getting it to work to get the share name correct.  I finally viewed the share on my Mac from my Windows 7 computer to see how it appears to the network and got it working.

If you get an error when you click Save and Test, post it here and we can try to help.

It should work since it works for me on ML and an 8600.  I do have the Premium model.  Not sure, but the basic (non-Plus, non-Premium) might not even have the Network Folder choice.  I know the 8500's were like that - a different firmware/feature set on the base model as well as the smaller LCD.

Re: HP Officejet PRO 8500 Wireless + Mac OS Lion

Hello

Firmware version LRP1FN1126AR is the latest firmware version available for the HP Officejet 8500.

From the printers front panel, networking menu, i believe you can print out  config test that will list the firmware version of the printer.
