Re: HP Officejet PRO 8500 Wireless + Mac OS Lion

I just purchased this printer today...how can I get my hands on the software and drivers for the printer?  I didn't have it installed in Snow Leopard and the CD will not allow me to install the software and/or drivers.  What options do I have at this point?

Re: HP Officejet PRO 8500 Wireless + Mac OS Lion

I just purchased the same printer and was unable to load the drive on OS X Lion. Says it is not compatible with the OS. What was your solution to the problem?

Re: HP Officejet PRO 8500 Wireless + Mac OS Lion

For the Lion OS there is not yet a full spftware solution.

For now, Simply connect the printer to your mac, or to the same network.

Enter System Preferences > Print & Scan

Clcik the '+' Sign and select both your printer and the additional Fax for it..

Click the Apple menu and then Software Update - Make sure to install any HP update and reboot your Mac.

You will be able to Print, Send a Fax from your Mac and scan using the Print & Scan or Image Capture.

A full feature solution will be released in the HP site soon.

Say thanks by clicking the Kudos Star in the post.
If my post resolved your problem, please mark it as as Accepted Solution :smileyhappy:

Re: HP Officejet PRO 8500 Wireless + Mac OS Lion

I have this exact printer, and it will not work and I cannot find an update for the driver. I have read that Apple has a update, click in the apple in the upper left hand corner and click software updates. Mine says everything is up to date even after restarting everything.

I got this printer when I got snow leopard and my (old perfectly good) scanner wouldn't work.

My next step is to call HP and/or go the Genius Bar. Right now I wish I never heard of Lion. I am sick of being the stupid consumer, when will I learn to leave well enough alone instead of supporting these conglomerates.

Re: HP Officejet PRO 8500 Wireless + Mac OS Lion

Thanks Meadeiator

I too have spent several unsuccessful hours trying to fix digital filing to network folder since 10.7 upgrade.

1. I have tried your work around with usb drive attached to time capsule, however while this drive is visable on time machine setup, it does not mount on the finder and does not appear in the drive list when trying to set up smb folders - what do you put in nitwork path to get this to work please?

2. In 10.6, I had to set up ten options depending on which IP address that machine had been allocated that day by my router eg

\\192.168.1.1\paul\Public\New Downloads
\\192.168.1.2\paul\Public\New Downloads

\\192.168.1.3\paul\Public\New Downloads

etc.

It would only scan to the folder if I chose the correct  one. Is there a better way to avoid this and how does it impact with 10.7 and the usb drive mentioned earlier?

Thanks

Re: HP Officejet PRO 8500 Wireless + Mac OS Lion

I recently purchased an HP 8500 A910n, installed it on Snow Leopard; wireless worked great.  Updated my iMac to Lion and wireless no longer worked.  Went to the HP forums and found others were having the same problem.  I could access the printer from my PC but from my Mac only via a hard USB connection, but I had bought the printer for the Wireless capability.  Apparently there were some changes made in Lion that Lion could not find and connect wirelessly to the HP printer using the HP code written for Snow Leopard which was already on my iMac.

After trying some of the suggestions in the forums and trying some other things unsuccessfully, I finally broke down and actually asked HP for help via their Live Chat.  A very helpful and patient support specialist helped me thru this.  After verifying a few things, he had me perform the following steps:

1.  Go into the Apple menu and select 'Preferences' >'Print and Scan'.  Then select any printer icon, hold the Ctrl key, click once from mouse and select "reset Printing System".  It removes any printers you may have.

2.  After making sure that your printer is on, and the wireless option light is on,  click on the "+" sign under the 'Print and Scan' window on the left side of the pane.  It may list some printers.  If there is no Bonjour printer listed under 'Nearby Printers', click on 'Add Other Printer  or Scanner'. A new window will pop up and should list your printer with  'Bonjour' or 'Bonjour Multifunction as 'Kind'.

3.  Select your printer and click on 'Add'.   Now try to print something from your Mac; it should work.

4.  If you have the FAX option, repeat 2.  it should also be listed in the window( without the 'Bonjour').  Select that and click on 'Add' again.

5.  Voila!  You're done and can close the 'Print and Scan' window.

Hope this helps or at least points you in the right direction!  Don't be afraid to ask HP for help.  It's free during your warranty period.  Hopefully HP/Apple will be releasing the HP 8500A printer Mac software update soon so others won't have to go through all of this!

Re: HP Officejet PRO 8500 Wireless + Mac OS Lion

Dear Meadeiator,

your guess is educated but unfortunately wrong. The 8500 Wireless uses the SMB protocol to communicate to a computer in order to save scanned documents from the glass pane or the ADF. Would HP use AFP it would only work with Mac OS X while utilizing SMB as a protocol works for Windows, Linux and OS X at the same time.

With OS X Lion Apple kicked out the open implementation of the SMB protocol, widely known as Samba. Because of licensing issues Apple replaced Samba with their own implementation, called SMBX. SMBX supports the newer version SMBv2 of the SMB protocol which makes it an ideal choice if you have Windows 7 hosts in your network, compared to Samba only supporting the slow SMBv1.

It is therefore likely that the issue lies in the firmware of the 8500 unable to coop with SMBX of Apple, possibly related to not fully supporting SMBv2 properly either. Clearly HP has to do something here since this will likely impact the Scan-to-Network functionality on all HP Printers (I guess they are sharing common parts of the firmware). And maybe in future even Windows itself, when Microsoft eventually decides to drop SMBv1 support in Windows 8.

So please HP, investigate this issue properly and provide a fix very soon.
