I can communicate with the printer. Just printed a test page. No problem. I also reinstalled the driver earlier to see if that was the problem. Gotta go now. Will check later.

OK, with the printer on and plugged in, hold the Option key on your keyboard and click the Apple menu > System Profiler. Click on the USB on the left side - does your printer show up there?

OK the Mac sees your printer through USB.
Is the USB connected directly to your Mac, not through a USB hub? Make sure a USB hub is not being used.
Do you have any HP software in your Applications folder? If so, lets uninstall the software using the 'scrubber' option:
Go to Applications/Hewlett Packard/ click on HP Uninstaller
Click on Continue
Highlight your device on the left pane
Press and hold Control + Alt + Cmd keys on the keyboard simultaneously while you click on Uninstall <<<< This IS the Scrubber Option, there is no button labeled "Scrubber"
There will be a pop up that asks if you are sure you want to uninstall ALL hp software. (At this point, if you continue, any HP printers you have installed will need to be reinstalled)
Click Continue and let it finish
Restart your Mac
Download and install this: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL907
Now reset the printing system:
- Sys Prefs, Print & Fax
- Right (control) click in the rectangle listing your printers and select Reset Printing System.
WARNING - this will delete ALL of your printers!
- Select the plus sign to re-add it. Look for the printer, select it and wait until the "Add" button becomes available. Click it.

I did that. Still unable to connect for printing. I didn't restart after uninstalling. I did restart after installing the new driver. Would that have made a difference?

Let's reset your Mac's SMC. Here are the instructions (not sure what model Mac you have): http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

Since I've installed the new driver your recommended, I have lost my software for scanning!

Yup. Have you tried scanning with Image Capture (in your Applications folder)? Open it, select your scanner on the left, then click "Show Details" and then "Overview" along the bottom.

Ahhh. I downloaded and re-installed the old driver. I guess I'll have to uninstall it again. Still can't print via USB; have not tried resetting SMC. This doesn't look like much of a solution--more like grasping at straws.
As I'm thinking about the start of the problem it goes back to early March when, at a place I volunteer, there was a Minolta printer/scanner/copier. Big one--pi3505e--. I tried to install the driver, but it was the wrong driver anyway.
I deleted the driver, but wonder if there are some remnants.
