I have an HP PSC 1400 All in one series printer. It's taking 15 minutes to print a photo in draft mode in OSX 10.7.4. I have all the latest OSX updates. This printer was printing fine previously.
Below the serial number on the bottom is Q7288A - Apr 26, 2005.

If you are using Snow Leopard or Lion and have HP software for pre-Snow Leopard (either from a CD not marked as compatible with 10.6/10.7 or you recently upgraded to Snow Leopard or Lion and had the HP software on your Mac before you upgraded - even if you did a standard uninstall of the old software or installed new software over the top of it) you must uninstall the software using the 'scrubber' option:
Go to Applications/Hewlett Packard/ click on HP Uninstaller
Click on Continue
Highlight your device on the left pane
Press and hold Control + Alt + Cmd keys on the keyboard simultaneously while you click on Uninstall <<<< This IS the Scrubber Option, there is no button labeled "Scrubber"
There will be a pop up that asks if you are sure you want to uninstall ALL hp software. (At this point, if you continue, any HP printers you have installed will need to be reinstalled)
Click Continue and let it finish
Restart your Mac
Download and install this: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL907
Now reset the printing system:
- Sys Prefs, Print & Fax
- Right (control) click in the rectangle listing your printers and select Reset Printing System.
WARNING - this will delete ALL of your printers!
- Select the plus sign to re-add it. Look for the printer, select it and wait until the "Add" button becomes available. Click it.

There is no HP Uninstaller in Applications.
I even used spotlight to find it, no luck. The only thing I do find is something called "hp utility" in /Library/Printers/hp/Utilities.
I tried installing the package you listed below. The printer still prints painfully slow.

Let's reset the printer.
Turn the printer off.
Unplug the power from the back of the printer for 30 seconds.
Plug back in and turn on.
Restart your Mac.
Also, make sure the USB is plugged directly into your Mac, not though a USB hub.

Did these steps exactly. Plugged in directly via USB.
I also reset the print system again. This time when I re-added the printer it said there was already a queue for this printer. I let it create a second one.
Still prints slow.

This is strange. What changed that started the slowness? Did you change print cartridges?

I did change the cartridges but it was printing ok for several weeks with the new ink. I don't know what started this.

I really don't know what it wrong. It seems like something in the printer, not the software.
There is circuitry in some printers to slow them down when the motors run hot. Perhaps the printer thinks the motors ARE hot when they are not.
I think its time for a new printer, sorry.
