HP Photosmart C4270 doesn't scan in Snow Leopard

I have been using this device for years on OS X 10.4 via Airport Express/Bonjour - using USB for scanning, though.

After upgrading to OS X 10.6 I have been printing without problems, but trying to scan for the first time (via USB), I ran into problems. I first tried the HP Scan Pro software, but after googling found out that it wasn't compatible with 10.6 and that Preview or Image Capture should work. But none of these work for scanning. When connected via Airport Express/Bonjour, the HP Utility, accessed via System Preferences/Print & Fax, can't even see the device - even though I can print to it.

I have read the support page, followed all the instructions, also tried to delete and recreate the printer queues, rebooting the computer and the printer - all without any luck. Of course, I have also run Software Update on my Mac.

According to the support page above, this device should be supported under 10.6 for both printing and scanning, so what can I do?

By the way: When I hopefully get my scanner up and running, should I delete the old HP applications, that I have used in 10.4?

Thank you for any help.

Re: HP Photosmart C4270 doesn't scan in Snow Leopard

Tried to download and install this set of HP printer drivers for Mac OS X 10.6 - even though it shouldn't be necessary. Now I can scan via USB - sort of. Only via System Preferences/Print & Scan, where I now see a Scan tab which wasn't there before. But it takes almost a minute before the scanner window recognizes my scanner. Then I can scan via Preview as well. But not from Image Capture.

Am I supposed to be able to scan via Airport/Bonjour? I still can't do that, even after deleting and re-adding the printer.

Is this supposed to be so hard?

Re: HP Photosmart C4270 doesn't scan in Snow Leopard

It works for me, once the printer is working on the network (not USB), when I go to the printer's IP address in safari (e.g. http://192.168.1.4 or whatever it is on your network)

There is a SCAN button which will bring a hi-res JPEG into your web browser, which you can save or copy/paste into another application.  Colour/B&W options too.

Low tech but it works.

OK - thank you. But how do I find the IP address? My printer/scanner is connected via Airport Express.

Re: HP Photosmart C4270 doesn't scan in Snow Leopard

On the printer itself there is a Network Settings button that will display your IP address, or print your complete network settings.

Or you can Spotlight "Airport Utility" or "Airport Admin Utility", and starting at the first 3 digits of the IP address given, in Safari try other combinations, e.g. http://192.168.1.101, http://192.168.1.102, 103, 104, etc until the right web page opens.

However under Snow Leopard there is another solution.  Open (or Spotlight) "Image Capture".  Wait for your printer to appear after about 1 min.  Click Show Details.  You can scan one page from glass, or multiple pages from the document feeder into a single PDF.  Both work for me, where the HP software failed.

(You may need to click on the preview and choose Select All to get the complete page into a scan.)

Neat!  And fast!
