Hi! I have a HP Photosmart C4580, and just got a Mac. Few issues,
1) After I finally found the option to print two-sided for my powerpoint handouts it wouldn't let me and was gray/faded out. I had to change the printer driver to something else random, and click allow "duplexing" (tried to do some research) . Then when it let me print two-sided it wouldn't let me print in color!
2) When I go to HP Scan Pro to try and scan something it says "Error, sorry, scanner could not be initialized. Scanner not found." My printer is on and can print documents, and my software is up to date. So a little confused.
Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you

Hi,
Please clarify which Mac OS version do you have.
to locate the infoe, click the Apple Icon and then About this Mac - the OS version will appear on that screen.
How did you installed your printer?
By using the attached CD, downloading from the Web or simply connecting to your mac and adding the pritner?
As the C4580 model soes not contains Automatic 2-sided duplexer unit, the Two-Sided option should be faded-out.
In order to manually duplexing, open the Print Dialog and click the 3rd selection box (Copies & Pages)
Now select Paper Handaling
Set the page to print as Odd Only and perform the print.
Now place the printed pages faced up and perform additional print, while setting the pages to print as Even Only
Now select Paper Type/Quality (the same menu used to select paper handaling)
Expend the Color Options by clicking the arrow located left to it.
Make sure it is set as ColorSmart/sRGB.
Regarding the scan issue, please let me know the Mac OS version as the HP Scan Pro is intended for older Mac OS versions, while for Mac OS 10.6 and above the suitable software will contain the HP Scan software

I have the most recent Mac OS X Version 10.6.8. I believe I did simply connect the printer to the Mac, and downloaded the software update from online. After that I also installed the CD the printer came with. I guess I will try to go in and re-download the very recent scan software from the web - or is my printer too old for this operating system? And you were very helpful!! Thank you!

Hi, You are wolcome ![]()
Please find below the software installation for your Mac OS:
Make sure to remove your printer from Print & Fax prior running the installation, by using the Minus sign.
As well, after completing the installation, make sure to install the HP Printer Software Update 2.7 by clicking the Apple icon and Then Software Update.
Click more details and make sure the specific update is selected.

That fixed the scanning! One more question - does the manual two-sided printing work when your printing Handouts (4 slides per page) for powerpoints? Because when I did the odd only then even only for the handouts, everything was jumbled up and not in the right order. Again thanks so much

I think Cheryl is having the same problem as me, and this answer doesn't really address the issue. When I was using the C4580 on my windows PC it had the option to Manually Duplex, so the computer would automatically print the odd sides and then ask you to turn the pages around before automatically printing the even sides.
Apart from when the pages would stick together on the second run through, it worked well. But I was disappointed to see the option blanked out on the MacBook. Is there any way the driver can be modified? Printing odd and then printing even isn't really good enough.
Thanks

Hi,
This is the way manual duplexing work on Mac OS X for any printer model, the Two-Sided option only refer to devices with automatic duplex accessory.
You may also check the Two-Sided Printing Software for Mac OS:

Tanks for the reply. I managed to find that in another thread in the end. It works fine, it's just a bit confusing that on a PC the option to manually duplex is there automatically, but on a mac, we have to download special software. Even more confusing why it is then hidden under the PDF button.
It is quite nice though, how the software is clever enough to rotate the page for you, so you don't have to worry about physically rotating the pages. Which was never a huge pain, but every little helps.
