Hiya, OK can I just express my lack of faith in HP for new Mac users. I have been following your threads and they are very helpful! I have got so far with it, and have click 'here' as you recommended to use my actually scanner to scan...but it told me to go to the computer. I have to go through 'print and fax' options to scan. Can you advise anything else?

Did you try to scan with Image Capture (my choice) or Preview?

There is no path: Library/Applications ..... . Do you mean Library/Application Support ...? This applies both to the disk 'Library' and the home folder 'Library'.
This inability of the system to allow scanning directly to the computer is a real nuisance. I don't much care how: through Print/Fax, Image Capture or Preview. It worked all three ways with the HP printer I just replaced. At present, I can only scan onto a USB-stick directly inserted into the printer. This allows me transfer the scan as JPEG to my computer, where I have to do a number of things to finally save it as the PDF format I need.
I run OS X 10.6.4 on an MBP 2.43 Ghz (May 2009) with a recently purchased HP Photosmart Premium C309g-m. All software completely up to date. Reinstalls et al done several times. No dice.
Help would be appreciated. In particular, I would like to know if the C309 software support 64-bit.

Actually, it is just Applications. Do this:
Go to Applications/Hewlett Packard/ click on HP Uninstaller
Click on Continue
Highlight your device on the left pane
Hold the Ctrl, Opt and Cmd keys and click on Uninstall
There will be a pop up that asks if you are sure you want to uninstall ALL hp software. (At this point, if you continue, any HP printers you have installed will need to be reinstalled)
Click Continue and let it finish
Now, run a Software Update.
Next, remove and re-install the printer in System Preferences, Print & Fax.
You do not need the software now since Snow Leopard has both print & scan drivers built-in. Scan from Preview or Image Capture apps. Scanning from the front panel of the printer does not yet work.

Dear DP,
Thank you for the advice. I had done all that, but did it again, just to make sure. No remedy, I'm afraid.
I am now giving up on this and will go out and buy a different brand of printer. I have spent more time on this problem than the cost of two printers.
It is beyond me why HP cannot get a grip on this. Apple too is to blame. After all they sell this particular type of HP in their online shop.
Cheers, DB

This solution also worked for me. I also had to download the updated software (info on later thread) and restart my computer. I then went to system preferences, selected printer/fax, deleted printer and added again, and then restart my computer again. I did this several times with some combination of the above and it finally worked. Thank you.

I was so sure this was going to solve my problem. Everything went as you instructed. I tried your other advice, also. But alas, nothing has worked. Using Image Capture, I get the message "No camera or scanner connected." Using Preview, "import from scanner" my HP is not appearing.Verified that the USB is connected directly to the HP, and prints just fine.
Any other suggestions?
