How is your printer connected to the Airport - wireless or USB?

It is hard wired to the airport via USB.

Oh, that is probably the problem. Also, connected via USB you will not be able to use your scanner.
Let's connect it by wireless, instead:
1. Disconnect the USB cable.
2. On the front of the printer using the Wireless menu, run the Wireless Setup Wizard to connect the printer to your network.
3. On your Macs:
a. Download and install this: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL907
b. Reset the printing system:
- Go to System Preferences > Print & Scan
- Right (or control) click in the rectangle listing your printers and select Reset Printing System.
WARNING - this will delete ALL of your printers!
- Select the plus sign to re-add a printer. Select the Defualt tab on the top of the window. Look for the printer, select it and wait until the "Add" button becomes available. Click it.

Seems to have worked with my Mac Pro, and odd, because hardwiring to the airport used to be the only way to print, but did the new HP update fix this? Still need to test with other laptops & machines on our network to determine if this is really working, and if there are any problems I will post asap. Thanks, FB

The printer is back to its elusive ways. Not having touched my computer or printer for a few days, I went back to print a pdf from the computer I successfully was able to print from and the computer was not able to connect to the printer. I have not changed my printer settings on the device, network, or computer. Please advise. Its terribly frustrating that a printer works one day and not another.

I manually relogged into the network (even though the printer was already logged onto the right one) using the printers network setup wizard, resent the print job and it worked. Do I have to do this every time from now on? Again, none of this was happening until I did an update install.

Let's set a static IP address for the printer:
- Print a Network Config Page from the front of the printer. Note the printer's IP address.
- Type that IP address into a browser to reveal the printer's internal settings.
- Choose the Networking tab, then Wireless along the left side, then the IPv4 tab.
- On this screen you want to set a Manual IP. You need to set an IP address outside the range that the router automatically sets (called the DHCP range). Yours is 10.0.1.2 to .200. Let's use 10.0.1.220 for your printer.
- Use 255.255.255.0 for the subnet (unless you know it is different, if so, use that)
- Enter your router's IP (on the Network Config Page) for the gateway.
- Enter 8.8.8.8 for the first DNS and 8.8.4.4 for the second DNS. This is Google DNS. You can choose another external DNS if you wish.
- Click 'Apply'.
Now, shut down the router and printer, start the router, wait, then start the printer.
After this you may need to redo 'Add a Printer' using the new IP address.

Hi: I get this message
Failed to open a session on the device
I did eveything you mentioned i.e. reset the printer. The wireless connection is fine but it still failed to scan wirelessly. It's ok with hardwire, when I use the printer's interface. But it doesn't work if I use the scan icon on my desktop.
Any ideas?
thanks

If you are using Snow Leopard or Lion and have HP software for pre-Snow Leopard (either from a CD not marked as compatible with 10.6/10.7 or you recently upgraded to Snow Leopard or Lion and had the HP software on your Mac before you upgraded - even if you did a standard uninstall of the old software or installed new software over the top of it) you must uninstall the software using the 'scrubber' option:
Go to Applications/Hewlett Packard/ click on HP Uninstaller
Click on Continue
Highlight your device on the left pane
Press and hold Control + Alt + Cmd keys on the keyboard simultaneously while you click on Uninstall <<<< This IS the Scrubber Option, there is no button labeled "Scrubber"
There will be a pop up that asks if you are sure you want to uninstall ALL hp software. (At this point, if you continue, any HP printers you have installed will need to be reinstalled)
Click Continue and let it finish
Restart your Mac
Download and install this: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL907
Now reset the printing system:
- Sys Prefs, Print & Fax
- Right (control) click in the rectangle listing your printers and select Reset Printing System.
WARNING - this will delete ALL of your printers!
- Select the plus sign to re-add it. Look for the printer, select it and wait until the "Add" button becomes available. Click it.

Thanks for all that, which I did. However previously I had a scanner icon in my sidebar, but not now. I can scan from the fascia on the printer body itself but when I used the icon in the sidebar, there were a lot more options eg adding pages to a pdf etc.
Also, now when I try to scan from the fascia I get a message "make sure the printer installed properly and then start the scan job with computer."
It is printing so must be installed ok. My Mac os is 10.6.8
Please advise again
