HP scanner software conflict

Hi!

Firstly my stats. I'm using an iMac 2.8 GHz and running OSX 10.5.8. Plenty of memory.

I've been using a Scanjet 3800 scanner, usually use it through Photoshop using the TWAIN plug-in.

Also have a wireless Photosmart c6380 All-in-One which I bought and installed after the Scanjet.

Initially I had problems getting the two softwares to co-exist but solved it after Googling a solution. Recently I had a problem with my Mac and had to do a clean install. Now my old problem is back - the computer automatically opens the Photosmart software, choosing it over the Scanjet.

Anyone know how I can have these two seperate scanners live side-by-side without fighting like this? Should I uninstall/custom re-install, does anyone know the best set-up to use?

Very gratefull for any tips :-)

Re: HP scanner software conflict

Hi momech,

Do you happen to have the Google link that you mentioned?  I would like to take a look to see if I can determine what that solution recommended to fix the issue.

You mention "the computer automatically opens the Photosmart software".  Can you provide me a bit more detail about the steps you were taking when this happens?

Thanks,

Re: HP scanner software conflict

Hi MacGuy,

and thanks for your help!

Unfortunately I didn't keep a record of the Google link - it was over a year ago - I can't for the life of me remember what it was I did, and I can't find the same solution on the net by reGoogling...

What I meant about the Photosmart software opening: if I tried opening the Scanjet via the Photoshop plugin, for example, it wouldn't use the Scanjet software but instead open up the Photosmart software, as if the Scanjet software wasn't installed.

I realised that my Mac wasn't finding the Scanjet scanner at all, and indeed it was impossible to scan directly from the Scanjet either. What I have done since posting is to uninstall both machines and reinstall just the Scanjet 3800. The problem remained - the Scanjet was connected correctly and powered up on starting my Mac, but it was for all intents and purposes dead, not even the buttons on the front of the scanner worked.

I have now however updated the driver via this link:

http://tinyurl.com/6ys384e

and the Scanjet is up and running! And working via Photoshop too :-)

Which leads me to a new question: what will happen when I reinstall the Photosmart C6380 software and update its driver? I have just installed the full HP Photosmart software (V 9.3.5) for my Scanjet, and it appears that the C6380 All-in-one requires the same software but in an updated version (9.8)...  will these drive routines not conflict with one another?

Hope you can advise me further!

Thanks in advance :-)

/Maurice

Re: HP scanner software conflict

Hmm, is there a reason you picked the older version of the Scanjet software (9.3.5) rather than 9.6.9 available at the following link (sorry I haven't learned how to alias URLs yet):

Not sure if this will help, but it's worth a try.

Re: HP scanner software conflict

Hi,

the reason I chose 9.3.5 is because that was what comes up on searching "Support and Drivers" on the HP site! At least it does everytime I do a search..

Should I install the 9.6.9, do you think it would be beneficial?

Might it help me avoid software conflicts on reinstalling my All-in-one?

http://tinyurl.com is a great site for shortening URLs, btw :-)

Re: HP scanner software conflict

Always best to obtain the latest software updates available for your device/OS from the support.hp.com site.  I recommend that you try the latest software for both devices and see if this resolves the conflict issues.

Before you install the new software, please open HP Uninstaller (part of your currently installed software) and remove all.  This should help ensure that you are starting from a clean slate.

... and thanks for the tip on tinyurl.com!

Re: HP scanner software conflict

Thanks so much MacGuy, your advice worked perfectly and I now have both sets of drivers living side by side in perfect harmony! Seems the latest drivers have done away with the need for a Photoshop plugin too.

So Kudos to you and thanks again for the help!

How to know when the next ? & answer session will be? I am having scanner trouble with HP PSC 1210v; but prints fine from my MacBook 10. 5.8  Is the scannerDriver combined with the Printer Driver as originally installed?? Thanks, GWMAX

Re: HP scanner software conflict

Hi GWMAX,

I'm honestly not sure when another "Experts" session will be scheduled, but please don't hesitate to post questions anyway.  We have a few folks who try to keep up with the discussions on a regular basis.

I would suggest that you start a new thread for your questions to raise visibiity.  For the best support, please provide as much detail as you can when you submit your query.
