I have a Photosmart 5510e and have just upgraded to Mountain Lion (10.8).
I can print wirelessly, and I can scan using the webscan function.
I have been through the HP process twice, removing drivers etc. With the HP drivers only installed I can see the scanner from the HP Utility, to enable scan to computer. If I select scan to computer on the printer, it launches HP Scan on my Mac but then fails with a communication error.
This stops working altogether once I do software upgrade to the Apple drivers.
On the printer and scanner app in settings, the product reports as a printer only.
I had this problem with 10.7 until a new set of drivers were released.
I can scan from the Windows machines on my network.
A bit annoying as the printer is an Apple approved product.

Hi George275,
Please verify which HP software you have installed. Did you already use the HP FF SW for Mountain Lion from this link: HP Photosmart Full Feature Software and Drivers -Mac OS X 10.8
Additionaly please test scanning from HP Scan from the Mac. Does the application crash in that case as well?

Hi Mandy
Yes I did use the full package as quoted.
HP Scan does not see the scanner at all from the Mac.
I just get the communication error, despite the fact I can ping the printer and the HP utility sees it fine.
The only method I can use to scan wirelessley is to use Webscan.
This is a pain because I want to scan sheet music and it is timeconsuming having to do it a page at a time and combine in Preview.
The Windows machines (that do work) belong to my Sons and they are often busy.

Hi George,
I suggest to first remove the HP Software again and then first add the printer (and scanner) via "built-in" drivers.
Please go into folder Applicaitons/Hewlett-Packard. Here open the HP Uninstall applicaiton. While you click on Uninstall please hold down the keys "CTRL", "ALT" and "CMD" simultanously. This will remove all HP Software (so if other HP device are installed, their sw will be removed as well).
Then restart the Mac and empty the trash bin. I recommend you also run repair disk permissions (Disk Utility in the Utilities folder).
Hence this is complete, open the System Preferences and choose Print & Scan. Click the Plus to add a new printer. Select your device and next to Use please switch from AirPrint to the HP device driver. You will now get a message that there is software available and if you want to install it (if your Mac is connected to Internet). Accept and install the software. You should now see the Scan tab again in Print & Scan. Please verify if scanning is now working (in this scan interface you can also choose to scan to PDF into a single file only).
If that still does not work, there might be a communication issue in your network - maybe your router does not full support Bonjour. To verify that, you can check in Safari via Bonjour Bookmark if you can access the EWS from here (not by inserting the IP address). The Bonjour Bookmark you can enable in Safari - Preferences - Bookmarks. You will then get the Bonjour bookmark from which you can choose your Photosmart (might be in a subfolder Printers or Websites).

OK
I think I've discovered my problem.
My router, provided by BT as part of the Infinity 2 package, seems to have a problem with Bonjour.
The wireless security setting is WPA2. Looking on the BT site a number of people have had problems with Airplay and other products (although I haven't).
Switching wireless security to WPA or WEP (not as good but it works) and restarting the router seems to work.
There is a little package called Bonjour Browser (freeware search on google). With WPA2 on it doesn't see the printer at all. With it off the printer and scanner functions are both visible.
BT are just telling people to switch the security setting to get around Bonjour issues.
