I am using an iMac and Mac OSX 10.6. The dialogue box below addressed incompatible components after initiating the HP Utility to select devices and functions to try out.
As I previously noted, I had already downloaded all the Mac OSX 10.6 relevant software and drivers...so this obviously did not correct the deficiency. I'm really frustrated, because this HP Photosmart Premium Fax (all in one) worked well prior to installing the Mac OSX 10.6.8 software upgrade. Now, nothing works.

OK, well, I assume you have "scrubbed" the old software, installed the correct software and the HP printer software from apple.com all referenced above?
If that is the case, and you are not using any antivirus on your Mac , then the next thing is to make sure your OS X is healthy:
1. Open Finder. Applications > Utilities > DIsk Utility. Select your Macintosh HD on the left, then "Repair disk permissions" along the bottom.
2. Download Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo
3. After it has finished, repeat #1.

An OSX reinstall is too drastic a step at this point for me. Let me clarify where I am now:
1. Apple shows that I have an HP Printer Software Update 2.8, but I'm unable to install it. it might be that I have already installed it, but I cannot confirm. More likely, the system will not allow me to put anything else from HP on this computer until the issues are resolved.
2. I only have one printer-scanner-copier-fax machine, the HP Photosmart Premium Fax C309. I have it connected for wireless operations. No other device would be conflicting wirelessly with it.
3. When I use the HP Utility to attempt to scan, the utility cannot find any scanners on my computer, so the ball just keeps spinning.
4. At your earliest suggestion, I used the HP scrubber without helpful results.
5. I believe I have the latest drivers on this computer, and I've used the HP software & driver fixes to ensure that is true.
In view of the above, what is the start again option involving only HP products and their relationship to my Mac OSX 10.6? I don't want to throw the baby out with the bath water through a reinstall of OSX, when the computer seems to be operating well enough.

First, the combo update is not an OS X reinstall. It simply installs all the updates between 10.6.0 and 10.6.8 in one package. It is not unusual for updates to be a bit mangled as you go one by one up the OS X update path, this fixes that.
The 'Start again' path is the scrubber option.

Mea culpa. I should never have doubted the tech services expert. The combo update seemed to eliminate whatever related challenges that existed before my post. Thanks.
